Getting A Missing Check Can Be Difficult But Worth The Trouble
by Adam Shell, AARP, February 4, 2022
Nobody wants to leave money on the table, especially a stimulus payment from the U.S. government that theyre eligible for but didnt receive. In late January the Internal Revenue Service announced that all third-round stimulus checks had been sent. But the IRS also noted that not all eligible Americans received the full amount theyre entitled to.
The good news? Theres still time to get whats owed to you.
Uncle Sam which issued 175 million third-round payments, totaling over $400 billion, through the end of 2021 reminded people that they can claim any remaining stimulus money theyre entitled to but didnt get by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.
The rebate, which comes as a tax credit of up to $1,400 per eligible person on your 2021 return, will either lower the amount of tax you owe or boost the size of your refund. The golden prize of a tax return is a tax credit, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, a tax preparation service. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a dollar-for-dollar tax-liability offset.

Do People Need A Fourth Stimulus Check
According to CNBC, there is a case for a fourth stimulus check that goes beyond the calls from lawmakers. The Economic Security Project, a progressive organization that advocates for guaranteed income no matter what the state of the economy, says there’s a need for more stimulus checks.
We need at least one more check, said Adam Ruben.
Ruben, the campaign director at the Economic Security Project, also said that stimulus checks should be “automatic,” and not stalled as they were last summer when second stimulus check negotiations caused a long gap between the $1,200 and $600 payments.
There are signs of recovery, though. The June jobs report showed a gain of 850,000, which was better than expected, according to The New York Times. That’s the strongest one-month gain since last summer.
Likewise, the Commerce Department said that gross domestic product had grown at an annualized rate of 6.5% for April through June of 2021, surpassing the figure it had reached before the pandemic, the Washington Post reported. However, that was less than the 8% GDP growth some economists had forecast.
Regardless, certain lawmakers are pushing for relief.
This unprecedented moment demands an unprecedented response. People dont only need relief, they need stability, certainty, and predictability and the ABC Act delivers them exactly that,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal .
However, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, didn’t appear to agree.
First Stimulus Check Payment In 2020
The $2.2 trillion dollar stimulus bill has now been signed into law. Under this bill there is the widely reported economic stimulus payment checks of $1,200 per adult and $2400 for couples. For families they would provide $500 for every eligible child. The full stimulus check would be made to those earning less than $75,000 and would phase out to zero for those earning more than $99,000 . Head of household tax filers will get the full payment if they earned $112,500 or less.
In the phase out range for every $100 you earn above the lower limit payment drops by $5 until you reach the maximum limit .
Example If Brian made $67,000 last year based on his latest filed tax return, he would get the full $1200 payment. If he had made $90,000 he would only be eligible for $450 . If he had made $110,000 he wouldnt be eligible at all.
|2019 or 2018 Filing Status||Income Below Which FULL Stimulus is Paid||Maximum Income To Qualify for Partial Stimulus|
|Single or married filing separate||$75,000|
Example My wife and I made $185000. We filed jointly. Are we eligible to get anything from the 2020 stimulus? Answer You would be eligible to get $650.00 under the direct payment program. Up to $150,000, you get 100% of the $2,400 stimulus payment. Anything over 150,000, you would subtract 5% of the amount over $150,000. So in your scenario, 35k over 150k. 5% of 35k is $1750, So $2400- $1750=$650.00

The COVID-19 pandemic was a nightmare for the countrys healthcare, finance, administration, citizens, and businesses. No government was prepared for such a crisis. Yet the Canadian government handled it quite well, given this was their first time. The Canada Revenue Agency played a key role in implementing Canadas largest stimulus package.
Yes, there was chaos, and many Canadians fell through the cracks. But the Justin Trudeau government tried to ensure that most Canadians are not left behind. Hence, it prepared a stimulus check for most common emergencies.
If you are a Canadian or a resident of Canada who was financially affected by the pandemic, you might qualify for at least one or all three recovery benefits, but you can only claim one at a time. These benefits will last till September 25. but the government might extend it if the pandemic aggravates.

What About On Social Security Or Ssdi
Social Security recipients, disability , Survivor Beneficiaries and Railroad Retirees who are not otherwise required to file a tax return will also be eligible for the stimulus payments, as long as their total income does not exceed the eligibility income limits above. The IRS in conjunction with the Treasury and Social Security Administration announced that recipients of Supplemental Security Income will automatically receive the $1200 Stimulus Check . See details here. This group of recipients will receive the stimulus check the same way they currently get their federal benefits in early May with no further action needed on their part.
However note that because the IRS has no information regarding dependent data for this group of recipients, the $500 kid dependent stimulus payment would not be automatically paid to this group. They need to use the non-filers tool on the IRS website to claim this.

Stimulus Check Scams And Hoaxes
Of course, popular demand for widely distributed stimulus payments, and the confusing political maneuvering that goes into crafting stimulus bills, creates an information gap that’s easily exploited by scammers.
Even with the first wave of stimulus checks in 2020, we saw bogus email messages that pretended to be from the IRS, promising “an important update on your Covid relief fund.” But they just took you to phishing sites that wanted your Social Security number and other sensitive bits of information.
Following the second stimulus bill at the beginning of 2021, those email phishing attempts were joined by scam phone calls demanding your personal details so that you could be “cleared” to receive more stimulus checks.
In March, as President Biden’s American Rescue Plan was making its way through Congress, new phishing emails promised the moon: a $4,000 stimulus check, a boost in the minimum wage, free meals and, best of all, priority treatment that let you skip lines at COVID-19 vaccination sites.
Most recently, cruel pranksters have been passing around posts on Facebook that a fourth stimulus check worth $2,500 is coming by the end of July. Don’t believe it, and don’t believe the phishing websites that claim to register you for child-tax-credit advance payments.
In fact, most parents and legal guardians don’t need to do anything to get the payments they’ll just show up in your mailbox or bank account.

What Impact Will Tax Season Have On My Stimulus Payment
Taxes for 2020 are due on May 17, 2021 . The IRS began accepting tax returns on Feb. 12, 2021. This means your third-round stimulus payment could arrive in the middle of tax season. This alone creates questions such as Do I need to file my 2020 taxes right away? Will the IRS accept my 2019 income? and, of course, Does this mean stimulus payments will be delayed?
Due to the winter storms that hit Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana in February 2021, the IRS has delayed the 2020 federal individual and business tax filing deadline for those states until June 15, 2021.
In answer to the first two questions, you dont need to file your 2020 taxes right away, but depending on your income in 2019 and 2020, you may want to. The IRS will use the latest year they have on file when your stimulus is processed. This means if all they have is your 2019 return, then thats what they will use if you earned less in 2020, then it could be better for you if that number is used.
While its possible that your stimulus check or even tax refund check could be delayed this year, according to the IRS, the additional programming and testing that resulted in the late Feb. 12, 2021, start date for tax season makes that unlikely.

Is Additional Help Coming For Maine Residents
After last years $285 payments from the states Disaster Relief Program, Maine residents might be wondering if state-sponsored payments will become a recurring benefit.
According to Austin, Mainers have no reason to expect another payout like this. While the stimulus check is a response to economic conditions, it was created for another practical purpose. Maine has budget rules like nearly every other state that require our budgets be balanced, she says.
More than half of the states budget surplus is going toward the new stimulus plan.
The new supplemental budget also includes other significant one-time initiatives. Budget highlights include:
- A tax break for those who collect a Maine retirement pension, including a gradual increase in their annual deduction, from the current limit of $10,000 up to $35,000 in 2024.
- An increase in Maines Property Tax Fairness Credit, which will give an estimated $1,000 per year in refundable tax credit to homeowners, and up to $1,500 a year to senior homeowners.
- Two years of free community college for pandemic-impacted students
- Up to $2,500 per year, or $25,000 per lifetime, in refundable tax credit benefits for student loan debt relief
Austin says that Maine has also permanently doubled its earned income tax credit .
Manchin Stance Sees Goldman Sachs Lower Forecasts For Us Economic Growth
Joe Manchins stance on the Build Back Better bill prompted investment bank Goldman Sachs to lower its forecasts for US economic growth. Manchins rejection of the bill threatened to scuttle hundreds of billions of dollars in funding for measures to fight climate change and meet the Biden administrations climate goals.
Manchin has expressed concerns about a number of proposals in Bidens signature domestic policy bill, including multiple climate proposals and extending monthly child tax credit payments.
Biden told reporters after Manchins rejection that he and the senator were going to get something done on the legislation.
Manchins support is crucial in the Senate chamber where the Democrats have the slimmest margin of control and Republicans are united in their opposition to the bill. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has said the chamber would vote on a package in early 2022.
US Representative Pramila Jayapal, a leading liberal House Democrat, has asked Biden to continue focusing on the social spending legislation and urged him to use executive action despite Manchins public rejection of the plan.
When will the COLA applied social security benefits be sent?

Stimulus Update: Can I Still Get My 2021 Check
Although most of the Economic Impact Payments made possible by the American Rescue Act have already been sent to eligible recipients, you still have the opportunity to claim the third stimulus payment worth up to $1,400 per person by filing your 2021 tax return.
According to the IRS, there is still time to file to get any missed 2021 stimulus payments. It is too late to use the Get My Payment app to check your stimulus payment status, but you can check your IRS Online Account for any unpaid stimulus payments and for what amount you might be owed.
The IRS also sent information to individuals in March confirming the total amount of their third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments they received for the tax year 2021, via a Letter 6475. The information contained in the letter or in your online account will be needed to submit a 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return in 2022. Checks will not be sent.
Third stimulus check payments are based on the most recent taxpayer federal tax return on file with the IRS. That means you could be owed more money if your income dropped or you added new dependents in 2021. If you never filed a tax return in 2019 or 2020, you might be due the full credit. If your income is $73,000 or less, you can file your tax return for free using the IRS tax preparation and filing software Free File.
