A Direct Deposit Payment Could Already Be In Your Bank Account Paper Checks Will Follow Quickly
When are second stimulus checks coming? Now! The IRS has already started delivering second-round stimulus checks to millions of Americans who received a first-round payment earlier this year. In fact, initial direct deposit payments have already arrived for some people.
If you don’t receive a direct deposit soon, watch your mail for either a paper check or a debit card. The IRS started mailing paper checks on December 30. To speed up delivery, a limited number of people will receive their second stimulus payment by debit card. But the form of payment for your second stimulus check may be different than your first payment. Some people who received a paper check last time might receive a debit card this time, and some people who received a debit card last time could receive a paper check.
If you receive a debit card, don’t throw it out thinking it’s junk mail! The debit cards will be issued by MetaBank, and they will arrive in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Treasury Department’s seal. The IRS will continue to send third stimulus checks until December 31, 2021. If you received an IRS Notice CP21C saying your stimulus payment would be held back to pay an old tax bill, you can disregard it. More than 100,000 taxpayers got this letter from the IRS in error, according to the agency. Instead, they should have received letters stating that their first Economic Income Payment couldnt be distributed, and they should use the Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet to claim their payment on their taxes.
What Other Benefits Are Included
The HEALS Act contains a number of other benefits and stimulus efforts for businesses, schools and workers. Some of the main provisions are highlighted below, but this is not a comprehensive list.

Amount Of Your Second Stimulus Check
Your second stimulus check will be for $600, plus $600 for each child age 16 or younger. If your 2019 adjusted gross income is $75,000 or less for single filers and $150,000 or less for married couples filing joint returns, you’ll generally receive the full amount of your second stimulus check. For Americans with income above those amounts, the payment amount is reduced.
You will receive an IRS notice, or letter, after you receive a second stimulus payment telling you the amount of your payment. Keep the notice or letter for your tax records.
There was a bill in Congress the CASH Act that would have increased the amount to $2,000 for each eligible American, plus an extra $2,000 for each dependent. However, that bill died in the Senate. Additional stimulus check bills could be introduced in the new Congress perhaps for $2,000 or some other amount. President-Elect Joe Biden has said he is in favor of additional direct payments.
Who Is Eligible For The Second Economic Impact Payment
Generally, U.S. citizens and resident aliens who are not eligible to be claimed as a dependent on someone elses income tax return are eligible for this second payment. Eligible individuals will automatically receive an Economic Impact Payment of up to $600 for individuals or $1,200 for married couples and up to $600 for each qualifying child. Generally, if you have adjusted gross income for 2019 up to $75,000 for individuals and up to $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns and surviving spouses, you will receive the full amount of the second payment. For filers with income above those amounts, the payment amount is reduced.

When Will A Second Stimulus Check Be Issued
The government began sending direct deposit payments on December 28, 2020. Paper checks were sent out starting on December 30, 2020.
Payments are automatically sent to:
- Eligible individuals who filed a 2019 tax return.
- Social Security recipients, including Social Security Disability Insurance , railroad retirees, and Supplemental Security and Veteran Affairs beneficiaries.
- Individuals who successfully registered for the first stimulus check online using the IRS Non-Filers tool or who submitted a simplified tax return that has been processed by the IRS
There is no action that you have to take to get your second stimulus check. People who provided their banking information with the IRS shouldve received their stimulus checks by direct deposit. Social Security and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who received the first payment via Direct Express shouldve received the second payment the same way.
The IRS sent paper checks or prepaid debit cards to people who did not provide their banking information. Mailed payments may be delivered in a different format than the first stimulus check.
All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

Most Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees and those receiving veterans benefits do not need take any action to receive a payment. Earlier this year, the IRS worked directly with the relevant federal agencies to obtain the information needed to send out the new payments the same way benefits for this group are normally paid. For eligible people in this group who didnt receive a payment for any reason, they can file a 2020 tax return.

Who Is Eligible To Receive A Stimulus Payment
Generally, U.S. citizens and green card holders are eligible for the stimulus payments. Also, the new law expands who is eligible for a stimulus payment.
In the first round of payments, joint returns of couples where only one member of the couple had a Social Security number were not eligible for a payment unless they were a member of the military. These families are now eligible to receive a stimulus payment, including the additional payment for their dependent children. The new law also made this expansion retroactive to the first round of stimulus payments. If your family did not receive the first stimulus payment because only one spouse had an SSN you can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 federal income tax return.
How Is My Second Stimulus Check Calculated
The IRS relies on your tax return to calculate whether you qualify for the second stimulus check. So your eligibility was based on your 2019 tax returns, which you filed by July 15, 2020.
According to the text released by Congressional leaders, the COVID-19 relief bill notes those with an adjusted gross income over certain limits receive a reduced amount of money, with the checks phasing out entirely at higher incomes.
Your AGI is calculated by subtracting the deductions that you made during the tax year from your gross income .
Heres a quick breakdown of the AGI limits for the $600 stimulus checks:
- Single filer checks begin to phase out at AGIs above $75,000.
- Head of household checks start getting phased out at incomes over $112,500.
The IRS reduces stimulus payments by 5% for the total amount that you made over the AGI limit. This means that for every $100 that you make over the limit, your check goes down by $5. At high enough incomes, the checks phase out entirely. So if you earned over $87,000 as an individual taxpayer, $174,000 as a joint filer, or $124,500 as a head of household, you do not get a stimulus payment. What Type Of Credit Is The Stimulus Payment
The third stimulus payment is actually an advance payment of a refundable credit that will be calculated with your 2021 taxes .
If you made too much money in 2020 to get the full stimulus payment, but you end up making less income in 2021 than you did in prior years, you could get a stimulus payment as a rebate in 2022. Luckily, if you make more money in 2021 than you did in 2020, you will not have to pay back part or all of your stimulus payment in 2022.

Who Is Eligible For The Second Stimulus Check
Eligibility is primarily based on four requirements:
1. Income: The income requirements to receive the full payment are the same as the first stimulus check.There is no minimum income needed to qualify for the payment. Households with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals will receive the full payment. This stimulus payment starts to phaseout for people with higher earnings. The second stimulus check maximum income limit is lower than the first stimulus check. Single filers who earned more than $87,000 in 2019 are ineligible for the second stimulus check.

2. Social Security Number: This requirement differs from the original eligibility for the first stimulus check. Originally under the first stimulus check, if you were married filing jointly, both spouses needed valid Social Security numbers . If one spouse had an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number , then both spouses were ineligible for the stimulus check. For married military couples, the spouse with an SSN could still get the stimulus check for themselves but not the other spouse with an ITIN.

Who Gets A Third Stimulus Check
The American Rescue Plan provides households with $1,400 for each adult, child and adult dependent, such as college students or elderly relatives.
The payments start declining for an individual once adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 and go to zero once income hits $80,000. The payment starts declining for married couples when income exceeds $150,000 and goes to zero at $160,000.
A qualifying family of four would receive $5,600.

Will You Get A Second Stimulus Check If You Got The First One
Because the second stimulus check passed by Congress is half the size of the first check, not everyone who got a payment in the Spring will get money this time around.
If your 2019 reported income was $75,000 or less, under the current plan you would be eligible to receive the full $600 one-time payment. Couples who reported an adjusted gross income up to $150,000 would receive $1,200.
If you reported making more than $75,000, you would receive partial payments dropping by $5 for every $100 above the income limits.
So an individual who earned $86,900, for example, would get $5 under Congress’ approved plan. During the first round of direct money, the money phased out at $99,000 for a single filer.
If you’re a couple making $174,000 or more, or a head of household making more than $124,500, you also won’t get a second stimulus check.
