Haven’t Gotten Your Third Stimulus Payment Here’s How The Irs Wants You To Claim The $1400
The stimulus checks that were part of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan first started rolling out in March, shortly after the third stimulus bill was signed into law. Over the last month or so, payments from the third round of stimulus checks have been making their way to bank accounts and mailboxes across the nation. In total, the IRS has delivered about 161 million stimulus checks to Americans who qualify, totaling more than $379 billion in direct payments.
But, while this round of checks has been issued at a record pace, there are still millions of Americans who are waiting for their payment to arrive. This round of stimulus money, which includes $1,400 payments for qualifying adults and their dependents, is meant to help Americans who continue to struggle due to the pandemic.
While the labor market is finally showing signs of recovery, we still have a long way to go to recover completely from the effects of the pandemic. Right now, it’s more important than ever to ensure that the money is distributed quickly — and also ends up in the hands of those who have faced financial hardships over the last year. If you haven’t received your third stimulus payment yet, don’t panic. Here’s an update on the status of the check distribution, and what the IRS says you should do if you haven’t received your stimulus money yet.

Youre A Member Of A Mixed
Under the CARES Act, U.S. adults with a Social Security number werent eligible for a stimulus check if they were in a mixed-status household, meaning one partner was undocumented or didnt have an SSN. A recent law change, however, scraps that rule. Now, individuals would be able to receive both payments retroactively meaning both the first and second stimulus payment for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs.
Youll want to reconcile that first amount with your Recovery Rebate Credit, if you didnt receive it.
How To Track Stimulus Checks In Child Tax Credit
Call the IRS at 919-9835 or 829-1040 to initiate a tracing after the required period of time has passed. Fill out IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund if you don’t want to call. Send the paperwork to your local IRS service facility. This article contains a list of IRS mailing addresses. To open Q F3, use the pulldown menu, as per The Ascent via MSN.
If you call for a trace, don’t add to the confusion by mailing Form 3911. Don’t be intimidated by how difficult Form 3911 looks. There are four key considerations to bear in mind:

What To Do About Payment Scams
Though it’s uncommon, you may believe you’ve been scammed out of your payment or had it stolen. The Federal Trade Commission has a website where you can report a stolen stimulus check. If you’re worried about theft, you can sign up for a free USPS service that will send you a picture of every piece of mail coming your way — including your stimulus payment.

Keep An Eye On Your Bank Account And Mail
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said last week that direct deposit payments would continue into this week. The official payment date for those direct deposit payments is Jan. 4, according to the IRS.
If you received your first stimulus payment via direct deposit, that is likely how youll receive the secondbut it isnt a guarantee. If the information the IRS has on file for you has changed, for example, you can probably expect a mailed payment this time around . In general, the IRS and Treasury urge those who dont get their payment via direct deposit by early January to watch their mail carefullyeven if you think you should have gotten your payment by direct deposit.
If youre expecting your payment in the mailwhich will come in the form of a check or debit cardyoull likely have to wait a bit longer to receive it. The cutoff date for the IRS to issue payments is Jan. 15, according to the text of the most recent coronavirus relief package. Last week, the IRS said that paper checks would start to be mailed on Dec. 30, but that deadline indicates that yours might not be in the mail until mid-January.
You can also use the Get My Payment tool to track stimulus payments. The tool will tell you if your payment was sent, and in what form . If it says Payment Status Not Available, you were either not eligible, or the IRS wasnt able to issue the second payment, so youll need to claim it when you file your taxes.
Stimulus Checks Could Be Seized To Cover Past Due Debt
If you owe child support or other debts, your first check was seized to cover those debts. The third check is subject to being taken by private debt collectors, but not the state or federal government. The same goes for the second payment, too, if you’re claiming missing money in a recovery rebate credit. You may receive a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service or your bank if either of these scenarios happens.
In the case of the third check, we recommend calling your bank to confirm the garnishment request from creditors and ask for details about how long you have to file a request with a local court to stop the garnishment. If you think money has already been mistakenly seized from the first two checks, you can file a recovery rebate credit as part of your 2020 tax return — but only if you filed a tax extension.
You can track down your stimulus payment without picking up the phone.

Confirm The Money Was Sent
The federal government mailed paper notices to all first and second-round stimulus check recipients after issuing their payment. Letters are also being mailed for the third round of stimulus.
The letter states the amount of the payment and method of delivery. One side is in English and the other is in Spanish. There is a notice date and number listed in the upper right corner.
If you did not get this letter , then you should create an IRS online account. The account will show the payment amount issued to you by the IRS, if any .
How Did The Delays Happened
Theres been a number of problems in issuing some Americans second stimulus checks. In fact, the U.S. government started sending out the second stimulus payments on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, and some found the money sitting in their bank accounts in late December. Others Americans have experienced delays.
Some customers who filed their 2019 taxes with either H& R Block or TurboTax in 2020 had their payments sent to those services, due to an error made from the Internal Revenue Service sending checks to the wrong accounts. Both tax services worked diligently to get these customers their economic relief payments.
We are happy to share that stimulus payments will begin to be deposited starting January 8th. We expect most payments to be available that day, but your bank could take a few business days to process, TurboTax said in an email statement sent to customers on Friday, Jan. 8, 2020, as PennLive previously wrote.
The statement continued, Your payment will be deposited into the same bank account that you received your 2019 tax refund. We have been working tirelessly with the Treasury and IRS to get your stimulus payment to you. We know how important these funds are for so many Americans and we regret that an IRS error caused a delay in you receiving your stimulus payment.

What Is A Plus
A plus-up supplemental payment is a new or larger payment you may be eligible to get if you recently submitted your 2020 tax return and your income or number of dependents changed.
For example, if you received a partial third stimulus payment based on your 2019 income, but your income declined in 2020, you may receive another payment to make up the difference between the two amounts. Your original third stimulus payment and your plus-up payment together will equal the amount youre eligible to receive based on your 2020 tax return.
On April 1, the IRS announced that new payment batches include supplemental payments for these people. As of late June 9, more than 8 million plus-up payments have been issued.
Can A Debt Collector Take My Stimulus Check
Child support, taxes, and other debts to the federal government are exempt from garnishment, but a private debt collector can try to take your stimulus payment. While previous rounds of aid prohibited debt collectors from garnishing stimulus payments, that protection was not included in this third round.
Congress may consider new, separate legislation to shield this round of payments from debt collectors.

How Do I Track My Payment
- “Payment Status” will show you the date your payment was processed and will tell you if you will receive funds via direct deposit or in the mail. If the tool says that you are eligible for a payment, but there is no date shown, that means that the IRS hasn’t processed your payment yet. It does not mean that you won’t receive one you will just get it in a future wave of payments.
- “Payment Status Not Available” means the IRS either hasn’t yet determined your eligibility or that you’re not eligible at all.
- “Need More Information” means one of the two things: Either the IRS does not have your account information and your payment hasn’t been processed yet, or the postal service was unable to deliver your payment and it was returned to the IRS.
The Latest On $1400 Stimulus Checks
This tax season, the government is also issuing a third tranche of third stimulus checks for up to $1,400 per individual, plus $1,400 per eligible dependent.
Last week, the IRS and other agencies said about 127 million checks have been sent to date, for a total of approximately $325 billion.
Those $1,400 payments are generally based on 2019 or 2020 tax returns, whichever was most recently filed and processed by the IRS. Those who used the IRS non-filer tool last year should also automatically get their payments.
There are also advantages to filing a 2020 return in order to receive the $1,400 payment, according to the IRS.
If your income dropped from 2019 to 2020, you could be eligible for a larger payment. The IRS has said it may potentially send follow-on payments to those people after their 2020 tax returns are processed.
Filing a 2020 tax return also lets you update your direct deposit information.
This tax season, non-filers are also required to file a tax return in order to get their payment, provided they have not already submitted their information to the government.
Of note, people who receive federal benefits such as Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Railroad Retirement Board and Veterans Affairs will generally receive their stimulus checks automatically, though there have been delays in processing some of those payments.

Stimulus Checks: What To Do If Your Payment Hasn’t Come
Hundreds, possibly thousands, of Americans are still missing their third stimulus payments months after the IRS began distributing checks, and it’s not clear why these individuals haven’t seen their relief money or when they finally will.
As of early June, the IRS and the Treasury Department had distributed more than 169 million payments totaling $395 billion. But according to Fast Company, many individuals have been working to track down their lost stimulus checks, trying everything from calling the IRS to contacting their Congressional representatives. Unfortunately, many of the payments remain outstanding.
It’s frustrating to have your stimulus relief in limbo, especially if those funds are needed to cover essentials like food and rent. It’s even worse to have little recourse and no clear path to receive that money. However, there are a few things you can try to track down your check.
First, if you haven’t done so already, use the IRS’ stimulus-check tracking tool to view the status of your payment. This portal can at least tell you if and when your funds were issued.
If you see “Payment Status Not Available,” it’s likely that the agency hasn’t processed your tax return or you’re not eligible for stimulus check 3. If that doesn’t seem right, you may need to do some additional digging.
I Got A Payment Status Not Available Message
Many checking on their second stimulus check were seeing a message that said “Payment Status #2 – Not Available.” The IRS has indicated that these individuals will not receive a stimulus check by direct deposit or mail and they will have to file their 2020 tax return to claim their “Recovery Rebate Credit.” See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
These messages have now disappeared and will be replaced by information about the third payment.

Missing A Child Tax Credit Payment Here’s How To Track It
If your December child tax credit check, or a previous month’s check, never arrived, we’ll tell you how to trace it.
If you haven’t received your child tax credit check, it could be late.
The monthly child tax credit payments have come to an end, but more money is coming next year. However, if you still haven’t received any checks or if you’re missing money from one of the months, you’re not alone. Many parents have faced child tax credit problems each month since the payments started. We can help you figure out what’s going on with your money.
For past payments, we found that if only one parent in a married household made a correction to banking info or a mailing address, it could have reduced the amount of the payment. Also, parents might have received more money than they qualify for due to outdated tax information from old returns, and inaccurate payment amounts could affect their taxes in 2022.
We’re here to help you figure out how to track your check online using the IRS Update Portal and file a payment trace if a few weeks have passed and there’s no sign of your money. Here’s the latest on the child tax credit extension. We’ve updated this story.
Where’s My 3rd Stimulus Check
The IRS is sending stimulus funds throughout 2021. If you haven’t received your payment yet, don’t assume you won’t ever get it.
You can check the status of your stimulus check using the IRS’s “Get My Payment” tool, which updates once a day. It will show you when and how your money is being sent, either direct deposit or through the mail .
If you get a “not available” status message, the IRS says you’re either not eligible for a third stimulus check or your payment hasn’t been processed yet. If you get a “need more information” message, you can enter your direct-deposit details to speed up your payment.
If you didn’t qualify for the third check based on 2019 income but that’s the most recent return the IRS has for you, file your 2020 return as soon as you can. Your payment will be sent once the IRS has processed your return.
If you aren’t required to file a tax return because your income is too low and you didn’t register using the IRS nonfilers tool last year, you will need to file a 2020 tax return to get any of the stimulus checks.
