How Come My Payment Is Showing Up Early Or In Provisional Status

IRS deposits first wave of stimulus checks early

This is normal given that the processing/start date of the given payment batch and payment could be a few days apart. Generally the payment date is 5 days after the processing date, so the payment is classified as provisional until the official payment date. That is why many eligible recipients see the direct deposit stimulus payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before the official payment date.

Where Are Stimulus Checks For Veterans Social Security Recipients Ssi And Ssdi

The IRS is also now processing third stimulus check payments for this group of recipients and their dependents, following several weeks of delays. This was mainly attributed to in getting updated payment and dependent data from other federal agencies . The majority of SSI and SSDI recipients should have now started seeing stimulus payments hitting bank accounts, with mailed checks and debit cards arriving in the coming weeks. But it would not surprise me if their newly eligible dependent payments take even longer to get paid out.

For those Social Security and other federal beneficiaries who didnt file a 2020 or 2019 tax return and didnt use the Non-Filers tool last year, payments will start as part of batch 3 and 4 processing . The IRS is also making stimulus payments for Veterans Affairs benefit recipients with the GMP tool now showing payment status for this group of recipients.

  • For households that havent yet filed for 2020, the IRS will review records from 2019 to determine eligibility and size of payment. That includes those who used the non-filer portal for previous rounds of payments.
  • For tax returns with direct deposit or bank account information, the IRS will be able to send money electronically. For those households for which Treasury cannot determine a bank account, paper checks or debit cards will be sent.

The delay shouldnt make much difference for some filers whose refunds are delayed every year, Holtzblatt says. Taxpayers who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit traditionally face a refund delay when filing early. Under the PATH Act from 2015, the IRS cannot issue refunds on returns claiming these credits until Feb. 15 in order to prevent identity fraud and fraudulent claims.

Even with the delayed start of tax season, the IRS says these claimants should receive refunds in early March, the same timeline as they would in a traditional filing season.

Yes, people who need the money wont be receiving it until perhaps late February or early March, Holtzblatt says. But for those people who probably need it the most, their income puts them in the range of the EITC in many cases, and their payments will get to them at about the same time as it normally would.

The American Rescue Plan Authorizes A Third Round Of Stimulus Checks When Might You Receive Your Payment

The IRS started sending third stimulus check payments just a couple of days after President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act. In less than a week, 90 million Americans had pocketed a total of $242 billion in stimulus payments. But that was just the first wave of payments. In any event, whether you get your payment in the next few days or in a couple of weeks, at least you know payments will be sent soon. And since the IRS has bank account information for more Americans than it did when first-round stimulus checks were being processed, they’ll be able to deposit payments directly into bank accounts for most eligible Americans. This will speed up the payment process considerably. That’s good news for people who lost income because of the pandemic and desperately need the extra cash.
