In most cases, the IRS determines whether someone is eligible for a stimulus check, and how much they’ll get, based on their most recent tax return â for 2019, or 2018 if the individual hasn’t filed yet this year. The deadline to file federal taxes has been pushed back from April 15 to July 15 this year, but nonetheless it may be in your best interest to file your taxes sooner than later.
People who have already filed their taxes do not have to do anything to get their checks. However, some people are not required to file taxes, and they could miss out on stimulus payments if they do not take action. Low-income earners â with gross income of $12,200 or less â do not need to file federal tax returns. For these people to receive a stimulus payment, they must register at the IRS’s “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here” page.
New Site For Tax Filers
The Treasury Department will be setting up a new site where people who have filed tax returns can use the Get My Payment application to let the IRS know your bank account information if they do not already have it and you havent received your payment. Ill pen a new article once that site goes LIVE.
The Irs Doesn’t Have Your Direct Deposit Info
The fastest way to get your stimulus check is via bank direct deposit from the IRS. If the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit info on file, you can still get paid, but it’ll come via paper check â and getting a check in the mail could delay your payment by weeks or even months. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told CNN that it was his idea that paper check stimulus payments have President Donald Trump’s signature on them, and that reports saying that the signature would add further delay to the arrival of paper checks is incorrect.
“The checks have not gone out yet,” Mnuchin said to CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, April 19, “and the reason they have not gone out yet is that we’re hoping that more people, as I said, will go to IRS.gov. It’s much safer to send out direct deposits.”
Most taxpayers provide the IRS with their bank account details, for the purposes of making a payment or receiving a tax refund. If the agency does not have your direct deposit details, you can provide the IRS with that information at the Get My Payment appâ which also lets you track the status of your check. However, the last day to give your direct deposit info to the IRS was May 13 if you missed the deadline, are eligible, and haven’t received your payment already, it will come as a paper check. You can still use the Get My Payment app to reveal how you will receive your payment , and give a scheduled arrival date, if the payment has been processed.

The Irs Tool Might Say Your Payment Was Sent To You
If the IRS’ online tool says the agency has issued your stimulus money, but you have no record of it in your bank account and it never arrived in your mailbox, you may need to take one of these steps, including possibly filing a stimulus check payment trace. Stimulus Checks Could Be Seized To Cover Past Due Debt
If you owe child support or other debts, your first check was seized to cover those debts. The third check is subject to being taken by private debt collectors, but not the state or federal government. The same goes for the second payment, too, if you’re claiming missing money in a recovery rebate credit. You may receive a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service or your bank if either of these scenarios happens.
In the case of the third check, we recommend calling your bank to confirm the garnishment request from creditors and ask for details about how long you have to file a request with a local court to stop the garnishment. If you think money has already been mistakenly seized from the first two checks, you can file a recovery rebate credit as part of your 2020 tax return — but only if you filed a tax extension.

The third Economic Impact Payments are now being sent by the IRS and Treasury. You might have already received your stimulus but not know it yet which well get to in a bit. Here is how to track your stimulus check.
Go to Get My Payment and verify your identity. After verifying who you are, youll see the status of your stimulus payment. You might not be able to see it though, and if its showing as status not available the chances of you not eligible for it is very high.
That said, make sure that youre eligible first. For the third Economic Impact Payments, the income threshold is $80,000 for single filers, $112,500 for heads of households, and $160,000 for married couples filing a joint return. These income thresholds have been adjusted with the changes. For the first and second stimulus checks, the income thresholds were $75,000 for singles and heads of households, and double that for married couples.
If your modified adjusted gross income is above the income threshold, the $1,400 stimulus will be reduced until it phases out completely. Your modified adjusted gross income is not your AGI though. To calculate modified adjusted gross income, figure out adjusted gross income, and add back the following adjustments if you claimed any.

Find The Status Of Your Economic Impact Payment Using The Irs Get My Payment Tool
Eligible individuals can visit IRS.gov and use the Get My Payment tool to find out the status of their Economic Impact Payment. This tool will show if a payment has been issued and whether the payment was direct deposited or sent by mail.
In certain situations, this tool will also give people the option of providing their bank account information to receive their payment by direct deposit. Information is updated once a day, usually overnight, so there’s no need to check it more than once a day.

Eligibility For A ‘plus
Because of the overlap with tax season 2020, many people may receive some, but not all, of their allotted amount. If your income changed in 2020, in some cases, the IRS may owe you more money than you received if the income figure used to calculate your payment from your tax returns in 2018 or 2019 is less in 2020. Likewise, if you now have a new dependent, such as a new baby, you may be owed more money.
The IRS is automatically sending “plus-up payments” to make up the difference. If you don’t get one, you may need to claim the missing money another way later in 2021 or even in 2022, since tax season is officially over now.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didn’t File A Tax Return
You couldn’t use the “Get My Payment” tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didn’t file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.
The non-filers tool wasn’t used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didn’t file a 2019 tax return, and you didn’t use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.
The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you don’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you’ll have to claim any money you’re owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you won’t file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.
