Americans Have Saved Up To 70% Of Their Latest Stimulus Checks Bank Of America’s Ceo Says Potentially Leaving Hundreds Of Billions Unspent

People begin receiving stimulus checks in their bank accounts
  • Americans have saved up to 70% of their latest stimulus checks, Bank of America’s CEO told CBS.

  • This could mean Americans have collectively set aside hundreds of billions of dollars.

  • “Our consumers have lots of money in their checking accounts,” Moynihan told CBS.

  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Americans have collectively saved billions from the last two rounds of stimulus checks, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan told CBS in an interview on Sunday.

“Our consumers have lots of money in their checking accounts,” Moynihan told CBS. “They have not spent about 65-70% of the last couple of rounds of stimulus.”

The second and third rounds of federal government stimulus checks totaled an estimated $575 billion, according to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, an economic think tank. If the US population at large have saved as much as Bank of America’s customers, this could therefore mean unspent money from stimulus payments is as much as $400 billion.

Moynihan said that so far in 2021, consumer spending has surged 20% above 2019 levels. He said that spending on car rentals and hotels for leisure travel was “strong.” He also said people were spending more in restaurants.

“The US economy is really set to go,” Moynihan said.

Bank of America has predicted that the economy will grow 7% this year, and 5.5% in 2022, Moynihan added, but labor shortages posed a risk to further growth.

Bank of America did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

Third Stimulus Checks: Fund Release

Around 160 million Americans are believed to be eligible for these payments and many of them have been desperately awaiting further support as the covid-19 pandemic has shaken their financial foundations to the ground, however, it has been suggested that some of the nations biggest banks are in less of a hurry to hand over said money.

“The goal is to get these payments out at fast as possible,” stated one IRS official after Biden put pen to paper, and taxpayers are able to check progress from Monday . But there could be a delay depending on which bank you are with as some said they would not be doing any processing over the weekend.

Customers who are eligible to receive direct deposit of their stimulus payment may expect it as soon as March 17, 2021.

Wells Fargo

While the official payment date for the $1,400 stimulus checks has been established as 17 March, the likes of Wells Fargo and Chase have faced heavy criticism for not releasing those payments already being deposited by the IRS this weekend. But is that really out of kilter with the process?

When Will Your Stimulus Check Arrive

The stimulus payments are being distributed to taxpayers either by direct deposit or by paper checks or debit cards arriving by mail. If youve been paying your taxes via direct deposit, the IRS should already have your banking information on file and will make the payment directly to your bank account.

For direct deposit, the IRS uses data already in its system to determine which bank account to send the payment to. That most likely happens by attaching a routing and account number to your 2020 or 2019 tax filing, as well as inputting one earlier in 2020 for receiving your first stimulus check. Those receiving payments by mail will have to wait a little longer.

This round, the Treasury Department is also working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service to identify federal records of recent payments to and from the government to find a possible bank account alternative for delivering stimulus payments as a direct deposit. The move helped accelerate the stimulus check delivery timeline, the IRS said in a statement.

In most cases, individuals arent required to take action to receive their checks and are discouraged from contacting the IRS, according to a Treasury Department release.

The IRS and Treasury Department anticipate sending out more tranches on a weekly basis moving forward.

Some of the checks could be hitting bank accounts as quickly as this weekend.

With President Joe Biden on Thursday afternoon signing the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan into lawone day earlier than expectedit paved the way for his new administration to quickly deliver expanded unemployment, direct cash payments, and other coronavirus pandemic relief to millions of struggling Americans.

This historic legislation is about rebuilding the backbone of this country and giving people in this nation, working people, middle class folks, people who built the country, a fighting chance, Biden said before signing the bill.

Now with the stamp of approval from the president, just how long will it take to see that much-anticipated stimulus check in your bank account?

According to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, the Internal Revenue Service could begin sending out the first wave of direct deposit checks as soon as this weekendwith the payments expected to continue over the next several weeks.

Like the previous stimulus payments, direct deposit recipients would be the first to get the money, followed by those receiving physical checks, which can take weeks to arrive by mail, and EIP cards, a prepaid debit card that one must activate online before using.

However, fewer Americans will receive checks this time around due to a change in the Senates version of the bill.

Who Is Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check

If youre trying to track your stimulus check, youll first want to know if youre eligible to receive one information that the Get My Payment tool wont explicitly inform you when you go track your check.

One good rule of thumb for determining if you qualify: If you were eligible to receive the full amount before, youll be eligible again. Income requirements for receiving full stimulus checks are the same for both individual and married tax filers, while income information is based on your most recently processed tax return .

If you earned up to $75,000 youre slated to get the full relief check worth $1,400. Married couples will thus receive $2,800 as long as their combined AGI doesnt top $150,000.

But the point at which payments completely phase out for Americans happens sooner on the income scale, a move meant to appease more deficit-minded lawmakers and shrink the size of the overall relief package.

Individuals total payments decrease by $28 per every $100 over the income threshold. Single filers and married couples who make $80,000 and $160,000 or more a year, respectively, wont receive a check at all.

Eligible U.S. adults will see $1,400 per each individual in their household, including adult dependents, such as college students.

If youre ineligible for a stimulus payment but currently out of work, heres how to apply for unemployment benefits.
