Third stimulus check is in COVID relief bill | USA TODAY

11 March will mark the one-year anniversary of covid-19 being declared a global pandemic. President Biden is set to speak on the pandemic in his first prime-time address the nation on Thursday. The US is now vaccinating over 2 million Americans per day and case numbers are coming down.

Even though there is light at the end of the tunnel, with only 10 percent of the nation fully vaccinated so far there is still a long way to go. To help bring a faster end to the pandemic and the economic fallout from it, Congress is poised to pass the $1.9 trillion covid-19 relief bill this week.

However, with the virus mutating the question remains, will there need to be another round of pandemic relief? Pelosi says it will be up to the virus.

What Should You Do With Your Third Stimulus Check

Lets be real: Three stimulus checks in a year is not normal. This third payment can go a long way to help you catch up on bills, pay off debt, or build up your savings. And for a lot of folks, those stimulus checks have kept food on the table. In our State of Personal Finance study, we found that 41% of people who got a stimulus check used it to pay for necessities like food and bills.

So, based on your situation, heres where you start:

If youre out of work or missing a paycheck, use this stimulus money to protect your Four Walls:

  • Food
  • Shelter
  • Transportation
  • Focus on the necessities so you can have peace of mind as you keep looking for work or get your income back up. That means if youre working the Baby Steps and youre out of work, pause your plan for now. Pile up cash until you have a steady income again. Then you can attack your debt. Theres nothing like fighting through a financial crisis to light your fire to be debt-free as soon as possible!

On the other hand, if your job is safe and you feel like itll stay that way, use your stimulus money to build momentum on whatever Baby Step youre on. Put your debt snowball into overdrive. Knock out your fully funded emergency fund . Or talk to your investment professional about giving your retirement a big boost !

What To Do If You’re Missing Money From The First Two Stimulus Checks

Plus-up payments are going out weekly along with the third round of checks, but they may not be the only money you’re due. For money missing from the first two checks, you need to claim that on your 2020 taxes. We suggest making sure you know how to find out your adjusted gross income. You may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit for claiming missing money from the first two checks.

Also, last week, the IRS launched a new online for familes that don’t file taxes called the “Non-filer Sign-up Tool.” Its purpose is to help eligible families who don’t normally file a tax return enroll in the monthly child tax credit advance payment program, which is slated to begin July 15. However, the tool is also for those who did not file either a 2019 or 2020 tax return and did not use the previous nonfilers tool last year to register for stimulus payments.

In other words, individuals who experience homelessness or make little or no income can use this tool to enter their personal details for the IRS’ records so as to receive the $1,400 stimulus checks or claim the recovery rebate credit for any amount of the first two rounds of payments that might have been missed. Tax nonfilers may need to be proactive about claiming a new dependent, too.

Us Economy Will Rev Up With Stimulus Package

Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of the onset of the covid-19 pandemic and economic collapse that ensued. The US has recovered some of that lose but there still remain roughly 9 million more people out of work than before the pandemic.

However now with vaccinations accelerating to over 2 million on average per day, the US could reach herd immunity by summer. That will allow people to finally go out more safely which in turn will help the economy to truly recover. Added to the equation is the sweeping covid-19 relief bill President Biden could sign this week. With the measures included in the bill the American economy is expected to recover twice as fast as expected.

Can I Claim A Stimulus Check For Someone Who Is Deceased

Has anyone received their third stimulus check?

Yes. For the third stimulus check, people who have died on or after January 1, 2021, are eligible to receive the third stimulus check. However, for married military couples, the date of eligibility is expanded. If the person who died was a member of the military and died before January 1, 2021, the surviving spouse can still receive the third stimulus check, even if they dont have an SSN.

For the first and second stimulus check, the IRS has stated that people who died on or after January 1, 2020, are eligible to receive both payments.

If they didnt receive the stimulus payments or didnt receive the full amounts that they are eligible for, spouses or other family members can file a 2020 federal tax return and claim it as part of their tax refund or use GetCTC.org if they dont have a filing requirement. The deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2021.

Us House Will Take Up Senate’s $19 Trillion Coronavirus Bill By Wednesday

The U.S. House of Representatives will take up by Wednesday the Senate version of the sweeping $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package backed by President Joe Biden, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Monday.

Closing in on final approval of one of the biggest US anti-poverty measures since the 1960s, Democrats aim to enact the massive legislation by Sunday, when enhanced federal unemployment benefits are set to expire.

The Senate passed its version of the bill after a marathon overnight vote on Saturday. The Senate version eliminated or pared back some provisions included in the House bill, which had increased the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour and extended expanded jobless assistance through Aug. 29.

Now that it has passed the Senate, it must be approved again by the House before it can make its way to Biden’s desk and be signed into law.

What If I Lost My Job Last Year And Now Make Less

This is important: People who lost their jobs or whose incomes decreased for any reason last year should file their tax returns as soon as possible to get the maximum payment. If the IRS processes your new return by the time checks go out, that’s the income the payments would be based on.

If you don’t file in time, it would be based on your 2019 income before the pandemic hit.

How Do Stimulus Checks Affect The Debt

    It sure doesnt lessen it.

Congress has passed three rounds of stimulus and recovery aid, with stimulus checks alone accounting for $877 billion. The three laws passed in March and December 2020 and March of 2021 total $5 trillion. Some economists argue that with interest rates near zero, now is the time to make that commitment because it will cost very little extra to re-pay it and money in peoples pockets will keep the economy moving.

No matter how its viewed, $5 trillion is a hefty addition to the debt.

Will You Get A Stimulus Check ‘plus

As the IRS explained in a news release on Thursday, these plus-up payments provide “supplemental” support for Americans whose third stimulus check had been based on information from their 2019 income tax returns, but who are now in line for a new or larger amount based on their 2020 returns.

When it started processing the latest relief payments, the IRS had to rely on the most recent data in its system. If you hadnt filed your 2020 taxes before the third round of stimulus checks was set in motion, the IRS would have used your 2019 return to determine how much money you were eligible for.

But maybe you earned less last year than you did in 2019, because of the COVID crisis. If you’ve recently filed your 2020 taxes, you may be eligible for a bigger stimulus check now so you’ll receive a plus-up to make up the difference.

Individual taxpayers whose returns show adjusted gross income up to $75,000 qualify for the full $1,400 stimulus check. The same goes for couples who file jointly and have AGI of as much as $150,000.

How a Third Stimulus Check Could Be Different From the First Two

The IRS will automatically send a third stimulus payment to people who filed a 2019 or 2020 federal income tax return. People who receive Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Railroad Retirement benefits, or veterans benefits will receive a third payment automatically, too. However, if the IRS can’t get the information it needs from your tax records, or from the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board, or Veterans Administration, then it can’t send you a check.

However, if you don’t get a third stimulus check now, you won’t lose out on the money if you’re eligible for a payment but you’ll have to wait until next year to get it. You’ll be able to claim the proper amount as a Recovery Rebate tax credit when you file your 2021 tax return, which is due by April 18, 2022 .

Taxpayers Must File A Tax Return To Get Their Stimulus Check

Anyone who doesnt file a 2020 tax return this year will have to wait to claim their $1,400, or the amount that they are eligible to receive, through the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. Much the same way that this year a taxpayer who was eligible for a larger payment in 2020, but their 2019 tax return didnt reflect that, could claim that money when they filed their 2020 tax return.

The IRS urges tax payers who havent filed yet, to do so as soon as possible to receive any of the tax provisions that they may be eligible for from the American Rescue Plan. One provision that will help families with children, the Child Tax Credit, will start sending direct payments to eligible families in July.

Bill To Be Approved By House

The Senate, where Democrats have effective control, passed its version of the bill on Saturday after a marathon overnight session.

The upper chamber of Congress eliminated or pared back some provisions in an original House bill, including an increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Now that the bill has passed the Senate, it must be approved again by the House before it can make its way to Biden’s desk.

The House was still awaiting the Senate version late on Monday. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters that lawmakers would “take it up Wednesday morning at the latest.”

Democrats hold a very narrow majority in the House, meaning they cannot withstand many votes by their members against the bill.

Us House Readies Final Vote On Biden’s $19 Trillion Covid

    – The US House of Representatives could approve the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion covid-19 relief bill as early as Tuesday, with a vote allowing the Democratic president to sign the legislation into law later this week.

Approval of the package, which is one of the biggest US anti-poverty measures since the 1960s, would give Biden and the Democrats who control Congress a major legislative victory less than two months into his presidency.

“It’s really just a matter of paperwork. But we are going to have a vote as soon as we can,” Democratic Representative Katherine Clark, the assistant House speaker, told CNN.

Why Are Income Limits An Issue

Third stimulus check questions: IRS still processing payments, more payments to hit accounts

The first two government stimulus checks $1,200 for the first round and $600 for the second round also set income thresholds that made higher-income households ineligible for the payments. In both earlier rounds, single people who earned up to $75,000 and married couples who earned up to $150,000 received the full payments.

People with higher earnings got smaller payouts as their incomes rose, until the payments cut off entirely for higher-income families. In the first round, the phaseout stood at $99,000 for single people and $198,000 for married couples.

In the second round of stimulus, the phaseout for the $600 checks was slightly lower $87,000 a year per single person and $174,000 per married couple. But that was a function of the smaller size of the checks, given that the law reduced both checks by 5% for every $100 earned above the income limits for full payments.

Recent economic research indicates that finances have stabilized for many middle- and higher-income families who have managed to work from home during the coronavirus pandemic. That is stirring debate among lawmakers and experts over whether the direct aid should be targeted toward lower-income households, who are more likely to feel the ongoing economic impact of COVID-19 and its spread.

Child Tax Credit In Stimulus Bill: Governent Relationship

Much of the direct aid of Biden’s package will temporarily benefit individuals as the nation’s economy slowly begins recovering from the pandemic.

But the legislation also plants the seeds for what could be a major transformation of the nation’s social safety net for the lowest-income Americans. The bill contains a one-year provision to dramatically expand the child tax credit, allowing for parents to receive up to $3,600 per child.

Democrats aim to distribute this credit through monthly checks. Parents with children aged 5 and under could get a $300 payment per child, while those with kids between 6 and 16 could get $250 each month.
