Make Sure You Get Your Money Once The Legislation Passes
Now that all stimulus payments have been issued by the Internal Revenue Service , discussion turns to the upcoming third round of checks under the American Rescue Plan. This massive $1.9 trillion rescue package includes direct payments to most Americans expected to start within days of the legislation becoming lawMarch 11, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the bill.
Questions about the amount, who is eligible, and when the stimulus might arrive begin to emerge. The information below will help you know whats on the horizon and what you will likely need to do to get your money.
Use The Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet To Calculate How Much You Are Due
by John Waggoner, AARP, January 13, 2021
En español | The Internal Revenue Service issued about 160 million stimulus checks to eligible Americans for the first round of economic impact payments that began in April. Millions more payments, dubbed EIP 2, started going out in late December for the second round of stimulus. Nevertheless, some people never got their first-round stimulus checks, while others didn’t receive the full amount to which they were entitled. The same will be true for the second round of stimulus payments.
If you didn’t receive money from the first or second round of stimulus payments or you didn’t get the full amount you should have don’t give up. You’ll need to file the standard 1040 federal tax return form, or the 1040-SR tax return for people 65 or older, to get your missing stimulus money in the form of a tax credit that will either lower the amount of tax you owe or increase the size of your refund.
You Moved Or Changed Bank Accounts
This actually happened to Hunsche with the second round of payments.
We had moved, so when the IRS wants to issue the second round of stimulus payments for the direct deposit, the information that they had for me personally was no longer what my bank account was showing, so I assume thats why we didnt get our direct deposit, he said.
He said this could cause the IRS to send paper payments or checks instead of doing direct desposit.

Will Tax Refunds Be Delayed Longer For Americans As The Irs Tries To Implement Tax Code Changes In The Midst Of Tax Season
Roughly 7.6 million returns havent been processed yet so far this tax season, according to IRS filing statistics through the week ended March 12. That’s nearly three times the number in the same period last year, when 2.7 million faced delayed processing.
Experts say that most Americans shouldnt expect a major delay in their refunds.
IRS has said there are no delays in tax refunds, unless tax returns trigger a closer look with information that warrants additional consideration as with significant changes from prior returns on information different than on IRS systems, says Steber.
Still, some Americans who made sure to file electronically on Feb. 12 when tax season kicked off contacted USA TODAY this month and said they were still waiting for the IRS to process their returns.
The IRS has said that the typical turnaround time for refunds is 21 days.
Some tax professionals are worried that millions of filers could face significant processing delays, especially those who already filed their taxes if they end up having to file an amended return to take advantage of new tax breaks on unemployment and dependent children from the latest relief package passed last week.
What Do I Do If I Never Got My Stimulus Payment
If your Letter 6475 says the IRS sent you a payment you didnt receive, contact the IRS. You can go to irs.gov/eip or call the IRS Economic Impact Payment hotline at 1-800-919-9835.
If you never got the payment and the IRS never said they sent one, fill out the form for the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your tax return. If you already filed your 2021 tax return, you can file an amended return.
Whats The Point Of Letter 6475
Many people lost or didnt get their Notice 1444, 1444-B, or 1444-C. These notices told you how much you got for each stimulus payment.
Letter 6475 is just a copy of the information from Notice 1444 to help people who need the information. It isnt an additional stimulus payment. It does not mean you got too much, got too little, or owe taxes. It just tells you what the IRS already sent you.
If You Owe Money Such As Child Support
Hunsches advice to those eager to get their checks is to be patient.
If you dont get it today, its not the end of the world. Itll probably still come, he said. Generally, by about the end of the month, everybody should start seeing their payments, or at least be notified of whats going on as to why you didnt get your direct deposit today.
He said youd most likely be notified by a letter in the mail.

What Should I Do If I Havent Filed My Return Yet But Want To Claim The Waiver
The IRS issued instructions for those who havent filed a return yet, but want to claim the waiver of $10,200 on unemployment insurance.
For those who havent filed yet, the IRS will provide a worksheet for paper filers and work with software industry to update current tax software so that taxpayers can determine how to report their unemployment income on their 2020 tax return, the IRS said.
The IRS is currently accepting federal returns with the new waiver for those who haven’t filed yet. Depending on your tax company, that function may or may not be available due to software upgrades needed, according to Steber. Jackson Hewitt has made all the changes under the new rule, he added.
Phillips said H& R Block would be ready to implement the changes Friday.
When Do I Need To File A Stimulus Credit On My Taxes
According to the IRS, you’ll be able to claim a missing payment on your taxes now with any payments going out after you file. You can prepare your taxes now — through the IRS’ Free File tax preparation service, if you qualify to use it — or through a tax-preparation service. The tax-filing deadline is April 15 this year, but you can file a tax extension if you can’t make the deadline.

- Support low-income Californians
- Help those facing a hardship due to COVID-19
For most Californians who qualify, you dont need to do anything to receive the stimulus payment.

Why Is My Tax Refund Coming In The Mail Instead Of Deposited Into My Bank Account
There are a couple of reasons that your refund would be mailed to you. Your money can only be electronically deposited into a bank account with your name, your spouse’s name or a joint account. If that’s not the reason, you may be getting multiple refund checks, and the IRS can only direct deposit up to three refunds to one account. Additional refunds must be mailed. Also, your bank may reject the deposit and this would be the IRS’ next best way to refund your money quickly.
It’s also important to note that for refunds, direct deposit isn’t always automatic. Just in case, sign in to your IRS account to check that the agency has your correct banking information.

Avoid Mistakes That Will Delay Your Refund
Simply claiming the recovery rebate credit won’t by itself delay the processing of your tax return or any tax refund. However, mistakes on your return including mistakes calculating the recovery rebate credit can slow things down and make you wait longer for your refund. Fortunately, though, you won’t necessarily lose out on the credit if you make a mistake on Line 30 of your Form 1040.
The IRS won’t calculate your recovery rebate credit or correct your entry if you enter $0 on Line 30 or leave it blank. The IRS will treat this as your decision not to claim the credit. However, if you make a mistake on the Line 30 amount , the IRS will calculate the correct amount of the credit, correct your tax return, and continue processing it.
The IRS won’t contact you before making a correction, and you won’t have to provide any additional information, but at least the IRS will send you a notice explaining any changes they make. This will also delay the processing of your return.
If you agree with the changes the IRS made, no response or action is required. If you disagree, call the IRS at the toll-free number listed on the top right corner of the notice.
What If Dont Normally File A Tax Return
The IRS said this third round of stimulus will be based on tax year 2019 or 2020 information, or information obtained by the Social Security Administration and Veterans Affairs Administration. If you are a non-filer who also does not receive a SSA or VA benefit, then use the Non-filer Sign-up tool, described below.
The IRS recently launched a new Non-filer Sign-up tool on its website. Although this non-filer portal is labeled as for non-filers claiming advance payments of the child tax credit, it is also available for others, including single individuals and people experiencing homelessness. It will allow individuals to provide their information to the IRS so that they can receive any of the three Economic Impact Payments , also known as stimulus payments, that they may be missing. If an individual did not get the full amounts of the EIPs, they may use this tool if they:
- Are not required to file a 2020 tax return, didnt file a 2020 tax return, and dont plan to, and
- Want to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and get their third EIP.
The new Non-filer Sign-up tool is for people who did not file a tax return for 2019 or 2020, and who did not use the IRS Non-filers tool last year to register for Economic Impact Payments.

What If I Wait Until The April 15 Tax Due Date Or File For An Extension
April 15 is the due date for all 2020 tax returns, but filing your taxes sooner will not only potentially speed up delivery of any tax refund you might collect but also position you to get any missing stimulus money weeks or even months faster. We made a handy comparison chart here that looks at the timing.
Filing for a tax extension won’t postpone your having to pay taxes you may owe. Those will still be due by April 15 otherwise, you accrue interest on the amount, which you’ll eventually have to pay on top of your income taxes. And you of course are delaying receiving your stimulus payment.
Could My 2019 Tax Returns Help Get My Missing Stimulus Payment Any Quicker
Depending on your personal tax situation, the Recovery Rebate Credit for your missing stimulus money would either reduce the total amount you owe to the IRS or give you a larger tax refund.
If the IRS has your direct deposit information from a previous federal tax return, the agency will attempt to deposit your check in the bank account you provided. If you receive your tax refund by check in the mail, however, or if the IRS info or your bank information is out of date, the agency will send your refund in the mail. The IRS didn’t accept direct deposit information for the $600 check, but you should consider registering a new direct deposit account with your 2020 tax filing.

Your Child Was Born In 2019 But You Took Advantage Of The Tax Extension
If you had a child in 2019 but got a late start on filing your 2019 return due to the coronavirus tax extension or you filed on paper, the IRS probably processed your first payment using your 2018 return. Youll get the extra $500 child credit next year when your 2020 return is accepted. But provided that your 2019 return has been accepted, you may receive $600 for your child from the latest round with your second stimulus check.

On March 11, 2021, President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan into law, which provided essential financial relief to individuals and families along with COVID-19 relief to states and localities. One component of the package is a third round of stimulus payments. Despite wide news coverage about these payments, many have questions about whos eligible and how to receive them. The third round also has different eligibility rules than the first and second rounds of payments, which were distributed earlier.
Below are ten things to know about the third round of paymentsincluding information on filing your 2021 taxes if you missed any or all of your payment:
1. The payments were $1,400 per qualifying adult and $1,400 per dependent. For the third round of stimulus payments, taxpayers could get payments for dependents of all ages, including children over the age of 17, college students, and adults with disabilities. The taxpayer received the payment on behalf of the dependent, although financially independent college students and young adults who are not claimed as a dependent may be eligible for their own payment. The payments were an advance against a new credit for tax year 2021. Filers can claim the payment, which is called a Recovery Rebate Credit, on their 2021 tax return if they didnt already receive the full amount. These payments will not affect eligibility for other tax credits.

How To Determine If You Have Money Coming To You
Starting in late January, the IRS began sending out information via what it dubs Letter 6475. Its something for taxpayers to watch out for, Steber says. At the top of the letter, which the IRS says it will send through March, youll see the words Your Third Economic Impact Payment. The letter, which the agency did not send out last year, provides details about the total amount you received in third-round stimulus payments in 2021 and includes all payments, even if they were issued at separate times.

You Havent Filed Your Taxes Yet
If you have not filed a 2020 tax return, then the IRS will use your 2019 tax return to determine your eligibility for the stimulus check.
That would be what theyd be basing everything off of, and if you didnt do the direct deposit with your refund or if you didnt get a refund, its possible that they dont even have a bank account on file, said Hunsche.
Lacking a recently filed tax return is one obstacle people experiencing homelessness face in trying to secure the COVID relief check.
People without an online bank account to receive a direct deposit or a fixed, physical address for a physical stimulus check are at a greater disadvantage when it comes to receiving the payment.
In October of 2020, the IRS recommended that people experiencing homelessness could qualify for a stimulus check by using the Non-Filer: Enter Payment Info Here tool.
Those people who missed the non-filer deadline of Nov. 21, 2020, were told to file a tax return and request the stimulus payment as a recovery rebate credit.
