It likely wont make a difference in the longer term other than to update dependent or payment data, but the IRS will only use your 2020 tax return data to determine eligibility for this round of stimulus checks if they have processed your return . If your 2020 return has not been filed and processing, they will use 2019 tax data for payment.

If your 2020 return is filed and/or processed after the IRS sends you a third stimulus check, but before July 15, 2021 the IRS would send you a second payment or require a repayment for the difference between what your payment should have been if based on your 2020 return and the payment actually sent based on your 2019 return.

What If I Qualify But Dont Receive My Third Stimulus Payment

IRS: Direct-deposit deadline for stimulus check is Wednesday

If you file your taxes using an online tax-preparation service or software, its possible that your payment will be sent to a temporary bank account that has since been closed. Tax preparers customarily set up such so-called Refund Transfer accounts so they can deduct authorized fees before passing the balance along to the recipient and closing the account.

If your payment is sent to a closed account, the financial institution is required by law to bounce the funds back to the IRS. If this happens , your only recourse may be to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 taxes.

Irs Statement Update On Economic Impact Payments

The IRS continues to take additional steps to get the second Economic Impact Payments to more eligible taxpayers. In addition to redirecting payments to the proper account in recent days to a larger group of people , the IRS and tax industry partners worked over the weekend to help a smaller set of impacted taxpayers.

    • Taxpayers Impacted – This impacts some taxpayers when tax preparation providers were unable to deliver funds to people as a result of IRS guidance, and they are now waiting for the IRS to re-process payments related to these accounts.
    • Payment Directly from the Government to be Received Soon – Payments will be issued directly from the government later this month , within weeks of the law being enacted. For people in this group, payments may be issued either as a paper check or as a direct deposit.
    • No Action Required by Taxpayers to Receive these Payments – Taxpayers do not need to take any action or call the payments will be made automatically.

The IRS regrets the inconvenience and greatly appreciates the assistance of our tax industry partners in helping accelerate a resolution of this issue.

Here Are Some Questions And Answers Around This New Stimulus Payment:

If I didnt file taxes in 2019/2020 will I receive the stimulus ? Unlike the first stimulus payment where those who didnt need to file a tax return could update the IRS non-filer tool, this time around due to the speed of roll-out of the second stimulus check and with tax season around the corner the IRS has said the non-filer tool is closed for updates. The IRS will be using information they have as of Nov 21, 2020 or from your first stimulus check payment . Otherwise they are encouraging you to the stimulus by filing a 2020 1040 or 1040-SR tax return. Free tax software programs can be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible to claim the credit.

How will I get paid? Like the first stimulus payment in 2020, the IRS will facilitate payment of these checks based on your 2019 tax information. You will also get the dependent stimulus payment for eligible dependents claimed on your tax return. For other groups who dont file taxes the IRS will work with other government departments or the Get My Payment tool. Direct deposit will still be the fastest way to get your payment.

Dependents in 2020? Households who added dependents in 2020 might not qualify for full payments immediately, since based on 2019 tax return information. But they can request additional money as part of the 2020 tax returns they will file in early 2021. See more in this articles for dependent qualification income thresholds.

Do You Need To File Your 2019 Income Tax Return To Receive Your Stimulus Payment

How To Update Direct Deposit Information For IRS Coronavirus Stimulus ...

If you filed for the 2018 tax year, you do not need to also file your 2019 federal income tax return before you can receive your stimulus check. The Treasury Department and IRS have stated that they can determine Economic Impact Payment eligibility and send a payment based on the personal information they have on file from an individuals 2018 tax return. The IRS website states that qualifying individuals who filed for 2018 will automatically receive their stimulus money, as will all qualifying individuals who receive Social Security retirement, disability , survivor benefits, Supplemental Security Income, Veterans Affairs Compensation and Pension benefits, or Railroad Retirement benefits.

If you qualify for the stimulus check but do not usually file a tax return because you are not required to, you also do not need to file a 2019 tax return to receive a COVID-19 pandemic stimulus payment. Qualifying non-filers can use the IRS Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here Tool to enter their bank information or provide the IRS with their current mailing address.

    Stimulus Check Payout Schedule

    • Direct Deposit payments will generally be deposited 2 to 3 days after the IRS confirms income eligibility for the payout.
    • Physical checks will take at least 6 to 8 weeks to be mailed out.

Social Security and Disability recipients who are eligible for the payment will get the stimulus checks/payments deposited the same way they currently get payments today. SSDI will automatically get a check based on the 1099 they get and do not need to do anything.

Can my stimulus check be garnished?

The CARES act has provisions to ensure the stimulus check payment cannot be garnished for overdue loans or back taxes , but this does not apply to child support payments that are in arrears. If youre behind on child support your stimulus check can be fully or partially garnished either wont get a stimulus check or will receive a reduced one.

Couples who file jointly and are eligible for the $2400 payment may also see smaller stimulus checks where one spouse has overdue child support from a previous relationship or marriage. Even if your spouse is solely responsible for the arrears or overdue payment, the shared stimulus check will likely be garnished.

Note there are some private debt collectors that are saying that stimulus payments can be intercepted to cover their overdue loan payments based on some vague wording the CARES act. However Congress and State legislatures are working to close this loophole.

What If Im Not Required To File Taxes

If you havent filed your taxes for 2019 or 2020 and werent planning to, you can still receive a third stimulus payment if youre eligible.

    • If you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, youll receive your Economic Impact Payment automatically without providing further information. However, if you have eligible dependents and did not provide this information to the IRS in connection with the first or second stimulus, you will not receive the supplemental $1,400-per-child payment as part of the third stimulus.
    • Note that eligibility for supplemental payments for dependents has changed. If you have dependents over the age of 18 who did not qualify for the first or second stimulus, they may still qualify for the third. To claim a supplemental payment for which you qualify under the third stimulus, you will likely need to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit the next time you file federal taxes.
  • If youre not required to file 2019 or 2020 taxes for other reasons and have not provided information to the IRS in connection with the prior stimulus programs, you wont receive a third stimulus payment even if youre eligible.
  • In order to collect unreceived stimulus payments for which you qualify , you can claim a Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 taxes.

$1400 Stimulus Payments: Whos Eligible And How Much Will You Receive

Eligible U.S. adults will see $1,400 per each individual in their household, including adult dependents, such as college students.

That breaks away from earlier rounds of Economic Impact Payments, when dependents only qualified for a stimulus check if they were under age 17. The new inclusion means 13.5 million more individuals will receive stimulus payments, according to an analysis of data from the Census Bureau.

Dependents also havent always been up for a check as high as adults payments, with the first round of $1,200 stimulus checks only allocating them $500. The second round, however, sent $600 payments to everyone who qualified.

Yet, eligibility criteria is considerably stricter than different rounds. A good rule of thumb: If you received a full stimulus payment last time , you should receive that full $1,400 amount.

Individuals who make less than $75,000 in their adjusted gross income and married filers who earn a combined $150,000 will be eligible for the full $1,400 or $2,800 payments, respectively. For example, a married couple earning $140,000 jointly with one child and one adult dependent will receive $5,600 $1,400 multiplied by four.

Head of households will have to make less than $112,500 annually to qualify for the full payment.

The IRS and Treasury Department will use your most recently processed tax return on file to determine your stimulus payment eligibility. For most, thats either income based on 2020 or 2019.

    Irs Coronavirus Stimulus Check Update

However, many taxpayers who are normally not required to file a tax return will be required to file a tax return in order to receive their stimulus checks.
