How To Claim The Mortgage Interest Deduction
- Step 1: Watch for communications from your lender or servicer in early 2022. You dont have to keep track of how much interest youre paying your lender or servicer takes care of that and will send you Form 1098. This should arrive near the end of January or sometime in early February, and should also include mortgage insurance premiums and any prepaid interest.
- Step 2: Do the math. Youll need to determine if itemizing your deductions will give you a larger sum than the standard deduction.
- Step 3: Hand your Form 1098 to your tax professional, or complete the Schedule A on Form 1040 on your own. All reported mortgage interest will be entered on line 8a, any unreported will go on line 8b and mortgage insurance premiums will go on line 8d.

What To Do If You Havent Received Your Stimulus Check Yet
Still waiting on your stimulus check? See what you may need to do.
As of June 3rd, the IRS has delivered 159 million Economic Impact Payments totaling almost $267 billion in assistance.
Of those 159 million, 120 million were sent by direct deposit with 35 million sent by check. The remaining 4 million were sent by prepaid debit card.
If you are one of the many Americans who is due a stimulus check but has yet to receive one, read on to find out why and how you might fix it.
First, lets recap who is eligible for a stimulus check as a result of the CARES Act:
- Single filers: Those earning less than $75,000 would receive a $1,200 payment.
- Joint filers: Those earning less than $150,000 would receive a $2,400 payment.
- Head of Household: Those earning less than $112,500 would receive a $1,200 payment.
- Dependents: Add an additional $500 per qualifying child
If you earn more than the threshold, your check is reduced by 5% of the amount over the threshold. A single filer would not receive a stimulus check if their income is over $99,000.
Its important that you calculate your benefit correctly because you may not have received a check because you were not eligible.
There may be other, unexpected, reasons why you were not eligible. For example, if one spouse on a jointly filed return did not have a Taxpayer Identification Number, the family would not be eligible for a check – even if the other spouse had a number.
If you were eligible, heres what you need to do next.

How To Claim Your Missing $600 Or $1200 Payments
The stimulus checks are generally advance payments of a tax credit.
The 2020 tax returns now offer a section where you can claim the recovery rebate credit for either the first $1,200 stimulus check or the second $600 payment if that money is due to you line 30 of Forms 1040 or 1040-SR.

Who Qualifies To Receive The Stimulus Payment For Minor Children When Parents Are Divorced
Divorce decrees may include a decision about who can claim the minor children as dependents on their tax returns. Parents may take turns claiming children. The parent who claims the children qualifies to receive the stimulus payment. If you believe the other parent received stimulus money in error, you may have to file a tax return to claim the full amount of the stimulus, or you might have to work this out in domestic relations court.
What Is A Recovery Rebate Credit
The IRS has lots of different rules, regulations and terms that make things confusing for filers, but pay no attention to the man behind the curtain: The Recovery Rebate Credit is simply just another name for your stimulus check. And if you were one of the lucky Americans who received two EIPs with no problems, you technically just received an advance of that Recovery Rebate Credit.
Americans can claim that credit by filling out a new, special section on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR if theyre a senior. That also goes for taxpayers who normally dont have to file a tax return, according to the IRS.
But rest assured: Receiving a stimulus check wont come back to bite you. The IRS says that the credit will only increase the amount you receive as a tax refund or decrease the amount you owe, rather than subtract from the refund youre entitled to. Your stimulus check also isnt considered taxable income.

I Filed My 2019 Tax Return But Didnt Use Direct Deposit What Should I Do
Thats fine the IRS will send you a paper check in the mail. But if youd rather not wait, you can input your banks direct deposit information into the IRSs Get My Payment tool to receive your stimulus check via direct deposit. Do it sooner rather than later, as a Treasury spokesperson said officials expect the first paper checks to be in the mail early next week, meaning the week of April 20.
One Note About Filing Your Taxes
Given the push for a third stimulus check and President-elect Biden’s call to get more money into the hands of hurting Americans, it’s likely there will be a third round of checks distributed in the next few months. We don’t know precisely how much that check will be or if Congress will change the qualifications, but it could be smart to keep a third round of checks in mind as you decide when to file your 2020 tax return. Here’s why: As they did with the first two rounds of stimulus payments, the IRS is likely to use the most recent tax return they have on file for you to determine your eligibility.
So if you earned less in 2019 than you did in 2020, you might want to hold off filing your 2020 taxes until the third check is distributed. On the other hand, if you earned less in 2020 than you did in 2019, you may want to file your taxes as soon as possible.
Additionally, if you are due a tax refund, consider having it directly deposited into your bank account. Doing so could shave weeks off the time it takes to receive the money.
The bottom line is this: If you are due a stimulus check but have yet to receive it, don’t worry. The money will make its way to you, even if you have to claim it on your 2020 taxes. In the meantime, coronavirus resources can help get you through until you’re on your feet.

What To Do If You Cant Find Your Stimulus Check
If your IRS online account shows that you should have received a stimulus payment, but you didnt get it, theres a chance it could have been lost in the mail. Or you might have thrown away the prepaid debit card you received.
If you lost your stimulus check or suspect it was stolen, you can request the IRS trace your payment. If the IRS determines your check hasnt been cashed, it will issue a credit to your account. It cant reissue your payment, but you can claim the payment on your 2021 tax return using the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet.
If a trace is initiated and the IRS determines that the check wasnt cashed, the IRS will credit your account for that payment. However, the IRS cant reissue your payment. Instead, you will need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return if eligible.
If you lost your EIP card, a prepaid debit card on which some individuals received their stimulus payment, contact card issuer MetaBank to request a replacement.
