When Should I Get My Payment
The IRS was given hard and fast deadlines to send the two rounds of Economic Impact Payments out to American families. The first round of payments had to be sent out by December 31, 2020. The second round had to be sent out by January 15, 2021.
What this means: If you have not received the first or second round of payments yet, then you will not be getting them in advance. The good news is that you can still do something to get these payments. Read below.

Stimulus Check Eligibility: Do You Get One
Stimulus check eligibility depends on how much you earn on the books each year. If you are a U.S. taxpayer that earned less than $75,000 a year according to your most recent tax return, you qualify for the full $1,200 payment.
Note that people on Social Security support dont need to apply for the payment. Unfortunately, in the rush to get out stimulus checks as quickly as possible, some have been sent to people who have died, according to CNN. And the IRS says those payments need to be returned.
Keep in mind that you must file your taxes to quality for the stimulus check. The IRS has extended the usual April 15 deadline to July 15, but the sooner the government has your 2018-2019 tax information the sooner you can get your payment.

Do You Pay Taxes On Your Stimulus Check
The short answer is no, you do not have to pay taxes on your stimulus check.
The stimulus check is recognized a tax credit, therefore it is not considered taxable income. Rather, no matter how much your payment is worth, you can deduct it from the total taxes you owe next year.
It will be reflected on your 2020-2021 tax return in your total refund amount, but you won’t collect it then because you’ve already received the advance. If you haven’t received your payment, check that you’re eligible and have fulfilled the requirements.

State And City Stimulus Checks
Congress has yet to agree on a fourth federal stimulus check, leaving many states to come up with their own programs to help eligible residents.
In California, the Golden State Stimulus II program offers residents over $568million in extra funding through the end of the year.
The program is for residents who have been financially impacted as a result of the pandemic.
Over half a million residents received $285 checks in Maine. In Maryland, qualifying residents can receive a check worth between $300 to $500.
Second Check: Likely Payment Dates
The first round of Economic Income Payments involved the set-up of most of the payment structure, something that included the creation of the Get My Payment tool. This allowed individuals to sign up for a direct deposit – the quickest means of getting a check – and also to track its movements thereafter. This time around, it is already there, is familiar to most, and has a lot more information than before. A smoother process is guaranteed.
We are also in a better position to predict payment dates, given that we have the experience of the CARES Act procedures. In that, we saw the bill pass the Senate on 25 March, the House a day later, and then President Trump signed it into law on 27 March. The first checks were issued on 15 April.
Although there is a risk that the HEALS Act will not be concluded by the proposed start of the summer recess the plan is that everything is done not to avoid further delay. In this case, we could expect the president to put his name on it by 10 August – assuming he doesnt try to veto the final bill – and that could then see checks issued from Monday 24 August.

Can My Bank Take My Stimulus Check
It may. The New York Times reports that some people banking with credit unions are in danger of having their stimulus payments taken to offset overdraft fees and other liabilities.
But The Times also said the four biggest US banks JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi Bank, and Bank of America have agreed to credit customer’s accounts to bring negative balances to zero for about a month so that any stimulus money deposited won’t automatically be taken to pay outstanding fees. Other large regional banks, including Fifth Third Bancorp, Truist, PNC Financial Services, and US Bank are doing the same.
Here’s some advice on what to do if your bank takes your stimulus payment.
What Are The Income Limits To Get A Stimulus Check

How To Claim Second Stimulus Check Through Irs Portal
Even though the possibility of a higher total amount currently hangs in the balance, when the terms are finally set in stone, the process will be much the same as last time, and the good news is that if you have already claimed the first stimulus check, you shouldn’t have to even claim for the second one. In addition, if you qualify and your banking and mailing information are correct, the stimulus payment will be sent to you automatically either by direct deposit or check. The IRS will continue to use its Get My Payment tool for tracking purposes
The IRS tracking tool is called Get My Payment, but is currently offline, pending further information on the changing situation in Congress regarding a second stimulus check. The tool can usually be used to track payments for both filers of tax returns and non-filers. The holding message on the site states:
The IRS continues to monitor and prepare for new legislation related to Economic Impact Payments. The IRS will make updates to the Get My Payment portal to provide updated information for taxpayers in the near future. Please continue to monitor IRS.gov for the latest information.
The Frequently Asked Questions page also includes information on how to claim payments missed from the first round of stimulus checks, or amounts not fully realised as well as how to manage various error messages on the tracker.

Millions of people typically don’t have to file a tax return each year — either because they’re part of a federal program like Social Security and veteran beneficiaries, or their income doesn’t meet the threshold. Those people are considered nonfilers by the IRS, and also include those experiencing homelessness. If you’re a nonfiler, will that affect when you get your third stimulus check of up to $1,400? Is there anything you can do to claim missing money from the first two checks?
You might need to file your taxes this year — especially if you’re claiming missing stimulus money or if you have new dependents, like a baby. If you’re experiencing homelessness, we’ll explain what you can do. We’ll also help explain why your second stimulus check could be missing — there’s a possibility you’ll need to request an IRS payment trace.
I Havent Filed Taxes In A While How Can I Receive This Benefit
You may be eligible for Child Tax Credit payments even if you have not filed taxes recently. Not everyone is required to file taxes.
This year, Americans were only required to file taxes if they earned $24,800 as a married couple, $18,650 as a Head of Household, or $12,400 as a single filer. If you had total income in 2020 below those levels, you can sign up to receive monthly Child Tax Credit payments using simple tool for non-filers developed by the non-profit Code for America.
If you believe that your income in 2020 means you were required to file taxes, its not too late. In addition to missing out on monthly Child Tax Credit payments in 2021, a failure to file in 2020 could mean losing out on other tax benefits or a refund you were owed. When Will You Receive Your Stimulus Payment After You File For A Recovery Rebate Credit
The IRS started processing 2020 tax returns on Feb. 12 but extended the tax deadline to May 17 and focused on sending stimulus checks instead. If you filed for a Recovery Rebate Credit as part of a 2020 tax form and submitted it in February or early March, you can check the status of your tax return and refund to see if it’s been processed. It isn’t certain what the IRS’ revised timeline is for processing tax returns submitted in mid-March and beyond.
If You Are Not Required To File Income Tax Returns For 2019
You are not required to file federal income tax returns for 2019 if:
- Your income is less than $12,200.
- Youre married and filing jointly, and together your income is less than $24,400.
- You have no income.
If you are not required to file a federal income tax return, then you will probably have to wait for the IRS to open up the Non-Filers: Enter Payments Info Here tool to submit the information to get your second stimulus payment.
The information you will need to provide includes:
- Full name, current mailing address, and an email address
- Date of birth and valid Social Security number
- Bank account number, type, and routing number if you have one
- Identity Protection Personal Identification Number you received from the IRS earlier this year if you have one. Taxpayers who previously have been issued an Identity Protection PIN but lost it must use the Get an IP PIN tool to retrieve their numbers
- Drivers license or state-issued ID if you have one
- For each qualifying child during 2019: name, Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number, and their relationship to you or your spouse

Stimulus Checks For Dependents And Children
For every child or dependent under the age of 17 , parents who meet the above eligibility requirements will receive an additional $500 economic impact payment.
However, if the child was born or adopted in 2020, parents will not be supplemented because the payments are based on 2019 tax returns. That said, the IRS is allowing new and payment-eligible parents to claim their child on next year’s returns for retroactive compensation.
Note that the second round of stimulus checks, which may come from the Heroes act to be voted on soon, removes the age limitations on who qualifies for the $1,200-per-dependent kicker. It does cap the number of dependents at three.
What If My Bank Account Information Changed How Will I Get My Second Stimulus Check
Unfortunately, if your second stimulus check is sent to an account that is closed or no longer active, the IRS will not reissue the payment to you by mail. Instead, if you are eligible to get a payment, you can claim the stimulus check on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

For those who have yet to get the payment authorized by the newly enacted COVID-relief legislation, the IRS opened up Free File, free online tax preparation products, on Friday. Now, taxpayers can claim a credit that will help them get their payment.
IRS Free File providers will accept completed tax returns and hold them until they can be filed electronically once the IRS begins processing returns, the IRS said. The Free File Fillable Forms, the electronic version of IRS paper forms, also will be available later when the filing season begins. This product is best for people comfortable preparing their own taxes and is safe and secure.
IRS Free File provider sets eligibility rules for products based on age, income and state residency. Americans who earn less than $72,000 a year will find at least one product for which they qualify, according to the IRS.
While many Americans already received an initial direct deposit payment, paper checks began to be mailed on Dec. 30.

You can also find out the status of your check and see if anything is holding the payment up.
The deadline to sign up for direct deposit for your first check has passed, however, the feature will likely reopen when and if a second stimulus bill is passed.
