How To File A Simple Tax Return In 5 Steps
You can easily file a tax return in just a few minutes that gives the IRS the information it needs to get you your payment .
Youre just going to have to provide some basic info, and its stuff you know, said Logan Allec, a CPA and owner of the personal finance site Money Done Right. Your name, your dependents names, your address, your Social Security number.
The one piece of information you might not know off the top of your head: the Social Security numbers of your dependents.
As long as you have all that information, youre ready to get started. Heres what to do.
What Impact Will Tax Season Have On My Stimulus Payment
Taxes for 2020 are due on May 17, 2021 . The IRS began accepting tax returns on Feb. 12, 2021. This means your third-round stimulus payment could arrive in the middle of tax season. This alone creates questions such as Do I need to file my 2020 taxes right away? Will the IRS accept my 2019 income? and, of course, Does this mean stimulus payments will be delayed?
Due to the winter storms that hit Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana in February 2021, the IRS has delayed the 2020 federal individual and business tax filing deadline for those states until June 15, 2021.
In answer to the first two questions, you dont need to file your 2020 taxes right away, but depending on your income in 2019 and 2020, you may want to. The IRS will use the latest year they have on file when your stimulus is processed. This means if all they have is your 2019 return, then thats what they will use if you earned less in 2020, then it could be better for you if that number is used.
While its possible that your stimulus check or even tax refund check could be delayed this year, according to the IRS, the additional programming and testing that resulted in the late Feb. 12, 2021, start date for tax season makes that unlikely.
How Will I Receive The Money Check Or Via Electronic Deposit
If you have received a tax refund via direct deposit in the past, the IRS has your bank account information and once details are finalized, they are expected to direct deposit the payments, to those eligible, to their bank accounts.
- Direct deposit if the IRS has bank account information from prior refunds
- New Tool introduced to provide information to update information if they do not . Note – the update bank information tool has since been closed.
If the IRS does not have your direct deposit information, see the flow-chart below to see if the Get Payment tool is right for you.

Who’s Eligible For The Payment
Those eligible for the money could include people whose tax situation changed in 2021, but the change was not reflected in their latest tax return.
For example, parents who welcomed a child in 2021 may be eligible for the $1,400 payments as long as they meet income requirements.
Eligibility for the third round of stimulus checks, issued earlier this year as part of President Joe Biden‘s American Rescue Plan, was based on a family’s last tax return filed.
Since babies born in 2021 were not factored in, the $1,400 checks will be applied to their parent or guardian’s 2021 tax return.
Others may be eligible for more money as well due to a change in income or the addition of a dependent.
Payments begin to phase out for people who make more than those income limits.
They completely phase out for individuals who make more than $80,000 and couples who make more than $160,000.
The number of families still owed a $1,400 stimulus check is not yet known but it is estimated to be in the millions.
The figure wont be known until the total number of births for 2021 is revealed.
Is There A Phone Number To Call
In general, no. There are millions of Americans trying to contact the IRS and we expect it will be very difficult. However, on May 18th the IRS announced that they will add 3,500 telephone representatives to answer some of the most common questions about Economic Impact Payments.
The economic impact payment information line is 800-919-9835.

Whos Eligible For A Stimulus Check
Those who filed a 2019 tax return arent the only ones eligible for a stimulus check. Non-filers can also qualify for one.
Heres a look at whats required in order to qualify for a check:
- Not dependent on another taxpayer
- A work eligible Social Security number with an adjusted gross income of:
- $150,000 for married couples filing jointly
- $112,500 for head of household filers
- $75,000 for all other eligible individuals
If you fit one of these descriptions, then you will want to make sure you register with the IRS before November 21 at 3 p.m. EST so that you can claim your check.
When Will I Get My Money
With Biden having signed the legislation on March 11, 2021, payments could begin going out as soon as the week of March 15.
Taking a more conservative approach, using the IRS timeline for the second round of stimulus checks as a guide, direct deposit payments could begin as soon as March 22, 2021, for those who previously received their second stimulus check.

What Is A Recovery Rebate Credit
The IRS has lots of different rules, regulations and terms that make things confusing for filers, but pay no attention to the man behind the curtain: The Recovery Rebate Credit is simply just another name for your stimulus check. And if you were one of the lucky Americans who received two EIPs with no problems, you technically just received an advance of that Recovery Rebate Credit.
Americans can claim that credit by filling out a new, special section on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR if theyre a senior. That also goes for taxpayers who normally dont have to file a tax return, according to the IRS.
But rest assured: Receiving a stimulus check wont come back to bite you. The IRS says that the credit will only increase the amount you receive as a tax refund or decrease the amount you owe, rather than subtract from the refund youre entitled to. Your stimulus check also isnt considered taxable income.
The 411 On The Third Stimulus Payment
If you havent received your third stimulus payment by the time you want to file your 2020 return, TaxAct will ask you several qualifying questions to accurately calculate how much you should receive. If not enough information is available, you wont be able to file until you can provide the detail needed for TaxAct to help you accurately report the amount on your return. Language in the new COVID-19 relief bill issues payments of up to $1,400 per taxpayer with an additional $1,400 per dependent.
Regardless of the situation, TaxAct will explain why you received the amount of money you did according to your tax situation. It will also explain whether you are eligible for more. For example, lets say you and your spouse received the third round of stimulus checks equal to $2,800 combined, which was based on your 2019 tax information. But you had a child in 2020, so based on your 2020 tax situation , you are now owed an additional $1,400 for your new dependent. TaxAct will calculate that scenario for you and let you know if you are due any additional money.
The second round of stimulus checks is based on the adjusted gross income on your 2019 tax return, which means if you are due more than what you receive the second time, youll also receive that money as a credit via your 2020 tax refund. The third round of stimulus checks is based on either your 2019 tax return or, if you did your tax filing early, your 2020 return.

How Much Will I Get
The third coronavirus stimulus package calls for individual payments of $1,400 to each qualified adult and $1,400 to each dependent.
Single taxpayers will receive the full $1,400 payment with a 2020 adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less. For couples, its $2,800 with an AGI of $150,000 or less. If you havent filed your 2020 taxes by the time checks go out, then your stimulus will be based on your 2019 AGI. The amount you receive will phase out and disappear at $80,000 for an individual and $160,000 in the case of a joint return.
After passage by both houses of Congress, President Biden signed the legislation into law on March 11, 2021. Direct payments of $1,400 to individuals are expected to begin within days of the legislation becoming law.
What Is The Third Stimulus Check
Shortly after the second round of stimulus payments, President Joe Biden was sworn into office. He immediately introduced the American Rescue Plan which basically meant the third round of stimulus checks. The third stimulus checks are for eligible Americans whether or not they missed out on the first two rounds.
The third payment stipulated $1,400 to individual taxpayers who are eligible and eligible couples who filed jointly get at most $2,800. It also provided that eligible families with dependents have $1,400 for each dependent. And, there was no restriction based on the number of dependents that can be claimed. It offers more chances for eligibility unlike the first and second stimulus checks.
The third stimulus check works like the first and second, in that it only involves one payment and it is not a recurring situation. The IRS may however give some people plus-up payments. It is a supplemental payment and it is only offered in situations where the stimulus check would be higher if its based on a 2020 tax return.
For instance, you may receive the third stimulus check payment at $900 from your 2019 tax return. If you later filed for the 2020 tax return and your payment due was $1,000, then the IRS will second another payment of the $100 balance. If youre also a married couple and have filed jointly, then you may also receive two-third stimulus check payments.

NEARLY Nine million Americans have failed to sign up to receive their $1,200 stimulus check, as the IRS announced an October 15 deadline urging those to take action and claim their money.

These are the step-by-step rules you should do to claim your money if you don’t typically file a federal income tax return.
Step 1: Full name, current mailing address and an email address.
Step 2: Date of birth and valid Social Security number.
Step 3: Bank account number, type and routing number, if you have one.

Maybe. If the noncustodial parent owes you child support arrears and the total arrears onall ofthe noncustodial parents cases meets the threshold amounts indicated in Questions #2, then you should be entitled to receive monies intercepted from the noncustodial parents tax return. The amount of the money you receive will depend on a number of factors, including the amount of the tax return intercepted, the amounts owed to you in your case, and the number of other child support cases in which the noncustodial parent owes child support arrears. You must also have a full-service case open with the Child Support Division to be entitled to receive any monies from an intercepted federal tax return.
