The third stimulus payment from the $1.9 trillion relief package has started to hit some bank accounts, the IRS said.

If you want to track your payment, the IRS on Saturday reopened its Get My Payment tool, which allows you to see when and how your payment was sent. It also allows you to update your bank account information, according to the IRS website. You can also update your information by filing your 2020 tax return, the IRS said, but that will take longer.

To use Get My Payment, date of birth, Social Security number, street address and zip code. If you try multiple times and you cant get through, you will be locked out of the tool for 24 hours for security reasons.

    Monthly payments from the expanded child tax credit will begin on July 15, the IRS said.

    STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The Internal Revenue Service launched a new tool ahead of the July 15 child tax credit payment that allows families to check and update their bank account information.

    The IRS will send payments via direct deposit into bank accounts already on file with the IRS all other families will receive the payment in the form of a check.

    Once a check is received, families looking to switch their payment method can update their bank account information for future direct deposits by using the Child Tax Credit Update Portal.

    The second payment is scheduled for Aug. 13. For that and monthly payments through December, updates to bank account information must be made by Aug. 2.

    As of now, the expansion of the Child Tax Credit program has only been approved for 2021, but President Joe Biden and various lawmakers have expressed interest in making the programs expansion permanent.

    Eligible residents who filed their tax returns in 2019 or 2020, or who signed up to receive a stimulus check from the Internal Revenue Service , have been automatically enrolled in the program and do not have to take any action to begin receiving their payments on July 15.

    Those who did not file taxes or sign up for a stimulus check can enroll in the program through the White Houses Non-Filer website.

You can also use the Get My Payment tool to track the status of your stimulus payment. However, the Get My Payment tool doesnt always work, and your request may result in a Payment Status Not Available message.

    You cant change the bank account information in the Get My Payment tool if the IRS already has your bank information on file. This is mainly to protect against possible fraud. You cant change the mode of delivery if the IRS has scheduled it for payment.

    Why You Get A ‘payment Status Not Available’ Message

    You can use the Get My Payment app to find out the projected date when your deposit is scheduled to arrive in your bank account. The Get My Payment tool will also tell you if you’re set to receive payment by paper check, along with a scheduled arrival date in the mail. However, there could be several reasons why you can’t get a status update on your stimulus payment right now.

    The IRS says that through midday on Wednesday, April 15, that over 6 million taxpayers had successfully found out their payment status through the new Get My Payment app. If instead, your inquiry resulted in a “Payment Status Not Available” message, the IRS says that this could be because:

    • You are not eligible for a payment.
    • You have not filed a tax return in tax year 2018 or 2019.
    • You filed your tax return recently and it’s still being processed, or you provided information through Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info on IRS.gov.
    • You receive Social Security, or are a RRB Form 1099 recipient, SSI or VA benefit recipient. Status updates for these recipients is not yet available through the Get My Payment app.

    Here are more explanations for why you can’t get a payment status update, or why your check simply hasn’t come yet. If you cannot get a status update on your payment, the IRS says that you should check back 24 hours later and try again then.

    What Happens If Your Bank Account Info Is Out Of Date

    If your most recent tax return provided the IRS with bank account info so your refund could be direct deposited, the IRS has no way of knowing you don’t use that account anymore. The agency will still deposit the money there.

    If the account is no longer open, your bank should have rejected the funds’ transfer. The IRS will be notified the payment didn’t go through and it will switch to sending you a paper check instead of trying to deposit your funds.

    The paper check will go to the most recent address the IRS has on file, which could be a problem if it’s an old address. Unfortunately, it could also take a really long time for your money to come even if your address is correct. The IRS has indicated paper checks will start going out the week of April 20, but only at a rate of about 5 million per week and staggered based on adjusted gross income ranges . With the number of checks the IRS has to send out, the agency doesn’t expect to be finished until August.

    If the old bank account is still open, the money will be deposited into it. You will need to figure out how to try to access the money from the bank. Contacting the bank directly is your best course of action. However, you could have a problem if you had unpaid overdraft fees or if debt collectors had a levy on the old account, as it’s possible those you owe could seize the stimulus funds.
