Who Is Eligible For The Second Stimulus Payment

Eligibility to receive a second stimulus check will be based on your 2019 tax return. An individual who recorded an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less on their 2019 taxes will qualify for the full $600. If their AGI was greater than $75,000, the benefits they receive will start to be phased out at a rate of $5 for every $100 they earn above the threshold.

For those who file their taxes with Head of Household status, the AGI limit is $112,500. Anyone at or below this threshold should receive full benefits. Their benefits will be phased out above this threshold at a rate of $5 for every $100 they earn above it.

For a married couple, the AGI limit is twice that of an individual, or $150,000 or less. Anyone at or below this threshold will receive full benefits. For those with a higher AGI, benefits phase out at the same rate as individuals and those who file with Head of Household status.

If they meet the income requirements, mixed-status immigrant families will also be eligible for the second stimulus relief check. This is a change from the first stimulus relief check. This means that U.S. citizens and green card holders who meet the income threshold will be eligible for the $600 relief check and the $1,200 check from the first stimulus bill, even if they file a joint tax return with an undocumented spouse.

Single People Earning Over $87000

The second round of checks will have the same type of income phaseouts as in the CARES Act, with the stimulus check payments reduced for earnings above $75,000 per single person or $150,000 per married couple.

The amount of payment individuals receive will be reduced by $5 for every $100 of income earned above those thresholds, according to the House Appropriations committee.

But that formula, when combined with the smaller, $600 amount of the checks, means that the income threshold for receiving any money will be lower: Single people earning over $87,000 won’t qualify compared with the phaseout threshold of $99,000 for single filers in the CARES Act.

Will Everybody Receive A Stimulus Check

No. These payments are intended to help middle- and working-class Americans, so there are income limitations based on your tax filing status. For single people, the payments are reduced for those with Adjusted Gross Incomes above $75,000. For married couples filing jointly, the phase-out begins at an AGI of $150,000. For those filing as head of household, the reductions begin at $112,500.

The payments are reduced by $5 for every $100 in AGI over the above limits. As a result, a single tax filer would see no payments if they have an AGI of $87,000 or higher. For a married couple filing jointly with no children, their payment would phase out completely with an AGI of $174,000. If youre a head of household with two qualifying kids, your payment would phase out completely at $148,500.

Democrats Sought $1200 Per Dependent

However, one bone of contention could potentially be the amount paid per dependent: while Democrats sought to increase it to $1,200 in the HEROES Act , the HEALS Act proposes maintaining the $500 CARES Act figure.

The HEROES Act and the HEALS Act also differ on whether or not to include immigrants without a Social Security number, who were left out of the CARES Act checks. Whereas HEROES vowed not only to bring them into the fold but also make them retroactively eligible for the CARES payments, the HEALS Act once more excludes them.

Cares Act Gives Americans Stimulus Checks Of Up To $1200

As part of the CARES Act, a $2.2tn relief bill passed in March, qualifying Americans have received checks of up to $1,200 to help them cope with the financial effects of the Covid-19 crisis, which has caused unemployment in the country to soar from pre-pandemic levels of 3.5% to its latest rate of 10.2%.

According to recent research by Columbia University’s Center on Poverty and Social Policy, CARES Act measures such as stimulus checks have helped to significantly curb poverty in the U.S. amid the financial crisis. Without the stimulus money, says the CPSP, around 4% more people in the country would have fallen into poverty.

However, an April survey by SimplyWise found that 63% of Americans said they would need a second stimulus check within three months of receiving the first, and the CPSP has warned that additional income support will be needed amid continuing high unemployment rates in the States.

With this in mind, the HEALS Act has proposed sending out a second stimulus check.

Some payments were missed due to clerical errors like incorrect addresses or routing numbers, others were supposed to have been paid to transient individuals without bank accounts or fixed addresses, and some payments never made it to their rightful recipients for a variety of other reasons.

Theyre not out of luck. In order to receive the payment, eligible filers will have to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns.

You Dont Need To Claim Your Stimulus Check

The IRS stressed that there is no additional action required for eligible individualseligible taxpayers who filed in 2019 will receive automatic payments. Payments are also automatic for people who did not file 2019 taxes and received Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits , Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income or Veterans Affairs benefits.

There is further good news for those low wage earners who do not typically file a federal tax return. If you successfully registered with the IRS Non-Filers tool by Nov. 21, 2020, and you are eligible, your payment should be sent to you.

Even if you didn’t file taxes in 2019, you may be eligible under certain categories. The bill summary states:

“Treasury may issue advance payments for Social Security Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance beneficiaries, Supplemental Security Income recipients, Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries, and Veterans Administration beneficiaries who did not file 2019 returns based on information provided by the Social Security Administration, the Railroad Retirement Board, and the Veterans Administration.”

Unfortunately, if your second stimulus check is sent to an account that is closed or no longer active, the IRS will not reissue the payment to you by mail. How Do I Know If I’m Eligible For A Third Stimulus Payment

For the first and second stimulus checks, whether you were eligible for any stimulus money depended on whether you were considered a dependent and the amount of your AGI from your federal tax filing. Your AGI is your gross income minus any eligible adjustments that you may qualify for. Since the tax deadline has been extended to May 17, the IRS is likely to use your 2019 tax return, if you file taxes.

If you have a pension or investments that are taxable, those will affect your AGI, and therefore your eligibility for a stimulus check. The same is true for interest from a bank account. Interest from tax-exempt bonds isn’t included in your AGI, however, so it wouldn’t affect your stimulus payment eligibility.
