Lets talk stimulus. First, lets talk about someone who normally does not file an income tax return, then someone who does. Then, well discuss what you can do if your stimulus payment got lost.

How To Secure A Timely Refund

Delaying the traditional start of tax season may help reduce confusion among taxpayers who havent received stimulus payments they are eligible for, but it also means a longer wait for Americans who rely on annual tax refund payments and file early in the season, or who wont receive any stimulus until filing their returns.

The IRS says nine out of 10 taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days of filing if they do so electronically using direct deposit and there are no issues with the return.

Thats three weeks that people are out that money, says Dan Herron, CPA, founder of Elemental Wealth Advisors in San Luis Obispo, California. But many who rely on an annual refund check, need that money because they bank on that to pay for medical expenses, or major purchases, or just surviving at this point. Thats frustrating.

Despite the late start, there are a few ways to ensure you receive your tax refund, including any stimulus payment youre eligible for using the Recovery Rebate Credit, as quickly as possible.

Get Tax Credits Youre Entitled To

The delay shouldnt make much difference for some filers whose refunds are delayed every year, Holtzblatt says. Taxpayers who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit traditionally face a refund delay when filing early. Under the PATH Act from 2015, the IRS cannot issue refunds on returns claiming these credits until Feb. 15 in order to prevent identity fraud and fraudulent claims.

Even with the delayed start of tax season, the IRS says these claimants should receive refunds in early March, the same timeline as they would in a traditional filing season.

Yes, people who need the money wont be receiving it until perhaps late February or early March, Holtzblatt says. But for those people who probably need it the most, their income puts them in the range of the EITC in many cases, and their payments will get to them at about the same time as it normally would.

When Will You Receive Your Stimulus Payment After You File For A Recovery Rebate Credit

The IRS started processing 2020 tax returns on Feb. 12 but extended the tax deadline to May 17 and focused on sending stimulus checks instead. If you filed for a Recovery Rebate Credit as part of a 2020 tax form and submitted it in February or early March, you can check the status of your tax return and refund to see if it’s been processed. It isn’t certain what the IRS’ revised timeline is for processing tax returns submitted in mid-March and beyond.

If you didnt get any payments or got less than the full amounts, you may qualify for the credit, even if you dont normally file taxes. See Recovery Rebate Credit for more information.

The tool is closed and it will not be available for other payments including the second Economic Impact Payment or the Recovery Rebate Credit. Economic Impact Payments were an advance payment of the Recovery Rebate Credit. You may be eligible to claim the credit by filing a 2020 1040 or 1040-SR for free using the IRS Free File program. These free tax software programs can be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible to claim the credit.

If you submitted your information using this tool by November 21, 2020 or by mail for the first Economic Impact Payment, IRS will use that information to send you the second Economic Impact Payment, if youre eligible.

TurboTax offers a new stimulus registration tool in partnership with the IRS to help low-income Americans who dont usually file taxes get their stimulus aid checks. The tool asks a few questions to find out how much your stimulus check will be.

The free tool also allows people to file a minimum tax return for this year with the IRS. It also provides a way for non-tax filers to give the IRS your up-to-date mailing address and direct deposit banking details.

You must first create a TurboTax account first to file your 2020 taxes or provide your mailing or direct deposit information.

Not Your Average Tax Credit

The stimulus payment or economic impact payment, as the IRS calls it is technically a tax credit. But this isn’t widely understood. Some people assume that the IRS will add the amount to your income, generating a bigger tax bill, or reduce your future tax refund when you file your tax return next year. Neither is the case, but this bears some explaining.

In the tax world, a tax deduction is a good thing. It reduces your income, which reduces the amount of tax you owe. If you had $50,000 in income and had a $5,000 tax deduction, your deduction would reduce your taxable income by $5,000. If you were in the 12 percent tax bracket, you’d reduce your taxes owed by $600 .

A tax deduction is good, but a tax credit is very good. A tax credit reduces your tax bill dollar for dollar. If you owe $1,500 in federal income taxes and you get a $1,000 tax credit, your tax bill sinks to $500.

A refundable tax credit is a thing of wonder. A garden-variety tax credit can reduce your tax bill to zero, but it can’t turn a tax bill into a tax refund. Refundable tax credits can. For example, if you owed $1,000 in taxes but had a refundable tax credit of $1,200, you’d get a $200 tax refund check from Uncle Sam.

Because you’re getting what amounts to a refundable tax credit now in the form of a third stimulus payment, rather than waiting to get the money from the credit in 2022 when you actually file your 2021 tax return, you’re in effect getting an advanced refundable tax credit.

Meanwhile, a recovery rebate credit has been added to this year’s return line 30 of Forms 1040 or 1040-SR for seniors in order to let people claim any missing funds from the first two stimulus checks.

Once a return is processed, that will prompt the IRS to send out those payments, the Social Security Administration said.

As the tax agency processes returns, it is also sending out new $1,400 stimulus checks to anyone it did not previously have on record, as well as “plus-up” payments to anyone who did not receive the full payment to which they are entitled.

The refund will include any missing money from the first or second stimulus checks, the Social Security Administration said. The third stimulus checks, however, will be sent separately.

  • Submitting a tax return wasn’t a condition of being eligible for a stimulus check.
  • But the IRS used tax-return data to determine how to pay out stimulus money.
  • Those who hadn’t filed a 2018 or 2019 return had to provide their information using a non-filers form .
  • The deadline for using the non-filers form has passed, so you now have to file a return to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit and let the IRS know of your eligibility.
  • If your 2018 or 2019 returns showed too much income to be eligible for a stimulus check, but your 2020 returns show an income below eligibility thresholds, you also have to file a return to claim your credit.
  • The good news is, if you didn’t file a return in the past but you submit one this year to claim your stimulus check, the IRS will have your information on file going forward. If the Biden Administration is successful in passing legislation providing a third stimulus payment, the IRS will have your updated information, and you should get the third payment without further action on your part.

    The IRS tool is for eligible U.S. citizens or permanent residents who had gross income below $12,200 for 2019 and werent required to file a 2019 federal tax return.

    They need to provide the following information:

    • Full name, mailing, and email address

    • Date of birth and Social Security number

    • Identity Protection Personal Identification Number

    • Drivers license or state-issued ID

    • Information about qualifying children: Name, Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number, and their relationship to you or your spouse

    The tools will use the information to file and automatically complete a Form 1040 and send it to the IRS.

    Theyll also help determine if youre eligible for the stimulus payment. If eligible, you need to answer a few questions, provide the required information, and choose whether to get the payment through direct deposit or check. If you dont provide direct deposit information, the check will be mailed to you.

    Social Security recipients and those required to file tax returns for 2018 and 2019 dont need to provide additional information and will get an automatic payment as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.

    If the IRS has your direct deposit information from a previous federal tax return, the agency will attempt to deposit your check in the bank account you provided. If you receive your tax refund by check in the mail, however, or if the IRS info or your bank information is out of date, the agency will send your refund in the mail. The IRS didn’t accept direct deposit information for the $600 check, but you should consider registering a new direct deposit account with your 2020 tax filing.

    To find the amount of stimulus payment youve received, you can:
