If someone files taxes and has not filed their 2019 taxes yet, they should file as soon as possible with their new name. They should make sure their name is updated with the Social Security Administration.
If a stimulus check is written out to someone under their previous legal name, they should still be able to deposit their check. However, they may need to speak with their bank and show legal paperwork documenting their court-ordered name change and old and new ID.
If someone is cashing a check outside of a bank, they should bring their legal documents with them and try to call in advance to make sure that they dont have additional requirements to cash the check.

How Do I Check My Child Tax Credit Eligibility Online
Before you begin, make sure you’ve got a copy of your most recent tax return. If you don’t have a tax return on hand, you can use your filing status and the number of children you claimed, along with an estimate of your total income for 2021.
Use the IRS Eligibility Assistant tool to answer a few quick questions to see if you qualify. Here’s how.
1. Go to the Advance Child Tax Credit Eligibility Assistant tool page on the IRS website.
2. Tap or click Check Your Eligibility.
3. You’ll then need to answer a few questions about yourself and your taxes. For instance, the form will ask if you claimed the child tax credit on a previous tax return.
4. You may need to provide additional information, depending on how you answered the questions. Here’s where you fill in your filing status, adjusted gross income and the number of children you claimed on your tax return .
5. After you hit Next, the tool will let you know whether you qualify based on the answers you provided. It’ll tell you the amount each kid under 6 qualifies you for, and how much each kid 6 and older qualifies you for. It’ll also show you the income phaseout details.
6. From here, tap or click Manage your advance child tax credit payments, which will take you to the child tax credit portal.

MANY Americans who received stimulus payments shouldnt have and some are wondering if they might have to pay back the money.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, three federal packages including stimulus checks have been passed.
The first stimulus package included $1,200 in direct payments, and the next one sent $600 to Americans.
But those who filed a tax return in 2021, and claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit might have a problem.
Of the notices, which typically reflect adjustments, 7.4million were related to stimulus checks.
The instructions for the 2020 1040 return advised taxpayers to note the amount they had received from their stimulus payments, but it reassured them that if they had received extra, they wouldn’t owe extra, Kari Brummond, a tax preparer at TaxCure, told The Sun.

Was The Stimulus Payment An Advance On My Tax Refund
No. The third stimulus payment is an advance on a federal tax credit for tax year 2021 .
Unlike other credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, the government distributed these payments ahead of tax season instead of making taxpayers wait until January. The purpose of the EIP was to stimulate the economy during the COVID-19 outbreak.
What If Someone Filed A Joint 2019 Tax Return And Is Now Separated Or Divorced And The Payment Went To An Account Or Address Belonging To The Former Partner
If the IRS delivers the payment to a bank account or address that belongs to a former partner, it will be a lengthy process for the person to get their payment. The IRS currently does not have a process to address this situation and views it as a civil matter. For assistance, contact your local Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, local Taxpayer Advocate Service, or community legal aid office.
One thing a person can do in the meantime is to document everything and request an EIP trace for their records. This will show that the payment went to the former spouses account. if the IRS develops procedures to address this issue, the person will have proof that they did not receive their EIP and could perhaps request a replacement payment from the IRS. When Will Economic Impact Payments Be Delivered
The IRS started distributing payments to people who already filed a 2019 or 2018 tax return and provided direct deposit information on April 9. Payments continued to be delivered via direct deposit throughout the month. Paper checks started to be mailed to people without direct deposit information at the end of April. Mailed payments are expected to have a significant delivery delay and some people will not receive payments for several months. See the chart at the end of this article for an estimated timetable for the IRS to mail checks.
If people complete the online form themselves, they should allow at least two weeks to get their payment through direct deposit or four weeks or more to receive their check in the mail.
The IRS Get My Payment tool allows one to look up the status of your payment, including the date when the payment is scheduled to be deposited or mailed.
How Taxes Figure Into Stimulus Checks
While you will not owe any taxes on your stimulus checks, the IRS does use your tax return in determining whether you are eligible to receive a check.
For the first round of checks in the spring of 2020, the agency looked at 2018 and 2019 year tax returns to determine whether you made too much to receive the $1,200 checks. For this most recent round, of which all checks were required to be issued by Jan. 15, the agency looked at 2019 tax returns for determining eligibility.

What About Individuals Who Made More Money In 2020 And No Longer Qualify For What They Received
People who make significantly more money in 2020 than in 2019 will not have to pay back any of the money they receive from the stimulus.
For example, if an individual earned $50,000 in 2019, they qualify for the full $1,200 stimulus check. If that same individual earns $100,000 in 2020, they are not required to pay back the $1,200.
The IRS will use 2018 and 2019 tax returns to determine eligibility for stimulus checks based on income. Adults who filed taxes with the IRS and earn up to $75,000 annually will receive $1,200 each, plus an additional $500 for dependent children under the age of 17. The stimulus amount decreases for those who make more than $75,000, phasing out completely for individuals who earn $99,000 or more annually.

What To Know If A Family Member In Your Household Died
If you received a payment for someone who died in 2019 or earlier, the IRS says you should return the entire payment “unless it was made to joint filers and one spouse is still living.” If you’re the living spouse, you should return half the payment — just not more than $1,200 in all.
However, if the check is issued in both your name and your deceased spouse’s name , you’ll need to return the whole amount to the IRS. After the agency processes the returned payment, it will issue a new check with the correct amount for you.
For the third check, it depends on which tax return the IRS uses. If it uses your 2019 tax return, you’ll likely get to keep the amount you received for the person who has died.
Who Is Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check
1. Income: The income requirements to receive the full payment are the same as the first and second stimulus checks. There is no minimum income needed to qualify for the payment. Households with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals will receive the full payment. The third stimulus payment starts to phaseout for people with higher earnings. The third stimulus checks maximum income limit is lower than the first and second stimulus check. Single filers who earned more than $80,000 in 2020 are ineligible for the third stimulus check.

2. Social Security Number: This requirement is different from the first and second stimulus check.
Any family member that has a Social Security number or dependent can qualify for the third stimulus check. For example, in a household where both parents have ITINs, and their children have SSNs, the children qualify for stimulus checks, even though the parents dont.

What If My Mailing Address Changed Since I Received My Previous Stimulus Checks How Will I Get My Third Stimulus Check
If you are expecting to receive your third stimulus check by mail, it will be mailed to the last address you filed with the IRS. If your address has changed since then, there are different options you can take to make sure your stimulus check gets to you:
Option 1: File your 2020 federal tax return to update your address. If you havent filed your 2020 tax return yet, this is an easy way to update your address. File a tax return with your current address and your payment will be sent through the mail once the IRS receives your updated address.
Option 2: Provide your banking information in the IRS Get My Payment tool. If the post office was unable to deliver your stimulus check, it will be returned to the IRS. Two to three weeks after the payment has been issued, Get My Payment will display the message Need More Information. You will have the option to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit by providing your banking information.
If you dont provide your banking information, the IRS will mail your payment once your address is updated.
Option 3: Notify the IRS that your address has changed by telephone, an IRS form, or a written statement. It can take 4-6 weeks for the IRS to process your request.
How Exactly Is My Stimulus Payment Amount Related To My Tax Return
The IRS uses the adjusted gross income, or AGI, from your 2019 federal tax return to calculate how much of the $600 payment and how much of your future payment your household will receive. Your AGI may be a different figure from your annual salary or your take-home pay, since it’s based on a variety of factors. The IRS may use your AGI on your 2020 return to calculate your third payment.

How To Return A Paper Check You Have Cashed Or Deposited
If you have already cashed or deposited the check , heres how you can return the money:
- Make a personal check or money order payable to U.S. Treasury.
- Write 2020EIP on the payment and include either the taxpayer identification number or Social Security number of the person whose name was on the stimulus payment.
- On a sticky note or sheet of paper, write down the reason youre sending the check or money order.
- Mail the check or money order and the explanation to your local IRS office .13
What If I Am Eligible For The Stimulus Checks But I Didnt File A 2019 Or 2020 Tax Return And Didnt Use The Irs Non
You can file a tax return even if you dont have a filing requirement to get other tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.
If you didnt get your first or second stimulus check or didnt get the full amount that you are eligible for, file a 2020 federal tax return and claim them as part of your tax refund or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement. The deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2021.

It all started back when the American Rescue Plan rolled out. States were given $195 billion to help fund their own local economic recovery at the state level.1 But they dont have forever to spend this moneystates have to use it all by the end of 2021, so the clock is ticking here.
