Still Dont Have A Stimulus Check Heres How To Track Yours

May 12, 2021 / 3:35 PM / MoneyWatch

While major banks in the U.S. started delivering $1,400 stimulus checks in March, the federal relief payments continue to arrive at millions of households struggling to make ends meet amid the coronavirus-hobbled economy.

The Internal Revenue Service has delivered more than 165 million payments, with a total value of approximately $388 billion, the agency said Wednesday. The latest round includes 1 million payments, with the IRS noting they have an official payment date of May 12. That means the most recent recipients will receive a direct deposit on Wednesday, or soon get a paper check or pre-paid debit card in the mail.

The timing and delivery of checks has been a cause of anxiety for some people, especially for those who receive government benefits such as Social Security and donât typically file taxes. The IRS prioritized sending checks to people who have already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, since the agency was able to quickly verify eligibility based on income and also determine where to mail or direct deposit the checks.

The agency said itâs sending another 500,000 payments to eligible people who recently filed a tax return but for whom it didnât previously have information to issue a stimulus check.

Do Ssdi And Ssi Recipients Have To File A Tax Return

People who receive monthly SSDI or SSI checks who did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 are not required to do anything, including filing a simple tax return, unless they have dependents. For those without minor children or other dependents, the IRS will look at Form SSA-1099 benefit statements to get the information it needs to send out the payments automatically.

Parents who have children under 17 or other dependents, who receive monthly SSDI or SSI checks, and who did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019, however, might need to file a tax return by May 17, 2021 to claim the “Recovery Rebate Credit” for their minor children or other dependents.

Direct Express Stimulus Check (2021 Update)

The Social Security Administration says residents can receive stimulus funds on their Direct Express card if the following apply:

  • You did not file a 2020 or 2019 tax return
  • You did not use the IRS’ “Non-Filer” tool at the IRS website to provide information to receive a previous stimulus payment and
  • You receive your monthly Social Security benefit or Supplemental Security Income payment via a Direct Express card.

SSA also advises those who received a previous stimulus payment as a prepaid debit card, and not on their Direct Express card account, may receive their third stimulus payment by check in the mail.

Federal benefit recipients with a foreign address will also get their stimulus by mail as the IRS will not deposit stimulus funds into foreign accounts.

“We are waiting for information from the IRS about timing for people who will receive their EIP by mail,” the SSA said.

Stimulus Check Struggles For Homeless Americans

While the number of Americans to receive stimulus checks continues to grow, one group has been very underrepresented in the figures. The lack of phones, internet access and fixed home address have made it very hard for homeless people to get their stimulus checks. Anyone who earns under $75,000 should be eligible for the $1,400 direct payment, but the reality is very different.

The New York Times reports: Steven Todd, 53, who lives at a shelter in Manhattan, said that educated guys who work in finance had approached homeless people and offered to get them their stimulus money for a commission of several hundred dollars.

On Wednesday the IRS confirmed that 156 million stimulus checks payments had been made as part of the third round of direct payments. Recipients of Veterans Affairs and related federal programmes are set to get theirs next week, but many in Congress are already turning their focus to the next round of support.

In recent weeks there have been growing calls for a fourth stimulus check, which many suggest should provide recurring monthly payments to ensure long-term support until the end of the pandemic. But who is in support of these proposals, and who is against?

When The Stimulus Checks Will Stop Being Issued

Most of the third stimulus check payments have gone out from the IRS and US Department of the Treasury, based on the information the IRS has on hand to determine payment amounts. The , however, gives these federal agencies until Dec. 31, 2021, to send out all the third checks. That gives the IRS room to process 2020 tax returns and square up payments for those who are owed plus-up amounts, folks who filed for a 2020 tax extension and other groups, like people who moved or donât have a fixed address .

Millions could end up receiving a smaller stimulus check than theyâre owed.

Stimulus update: 5 things to know about $1,400 payments

Every eligible American will receive a $1,400 third stimulus check “base amount.” The base amount jumps to $2,800 for married couples filing a joint tax return. You also get an extra $1,400 for each dependent in your family .

Not everyone will receive the full amount, though. As with the first two stimulus payments, third-round stimulus checks will be reduced potentially to zero for people reporting an adjusted gross income above a certain amount on their latest tax return. If you filed your most recent tax return as a single filer, your third stimulus check will be phased-out if your AGI is $75,000 or more. That threshold jumps to $112,500 for head-of-household filers, and to $150,000 for married couples filing a joint return. Third-round stimulus checks will be completely phased out for single filers with an AGI above $80,000, head-of-household filers with an AGI over $120,000, and joint filers with an AGI exceeding $160,000.

Lawmakers Alarmed By Delay

The delay in delivering stimulus payments to Social Security recipients and others on government assistance drew attention from lawmakers earlier this week. On March 22, members of the House Ways & Means Committee wrote to IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig and Social Security Administration Commissioner Andrew M. Saul to express concern and demand an update on the delivery of checks to these groups by Friday.

They followed with the letter on Wednesday, demanding “that you immediately provide the IRS with this information by tomorrow, March 25, 2021.”

In the March 22 letter, they noted, “Some of our most vulnerable seniors and persons with disabilities, including veterans who served our country with honor, are unable to pay for basic necessities while they wait for their overdue payments.”

Gop Leaders Ask Ag To Join Lawsuit Challenging American Rescue Plan Provision

The state’s top legislative leaders are calling on the AG, Josh Kaul, to join a lawsuit challenging ARPA rule that states can’t use stimulus money to cut taxes. The biggest part of the GOP proposal in WI is $1 billion in direct checks to property owners.

As Bayatpour explains, the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau stated this week the state could have to repay that money under its understanding of ARPA guidelines.

Gov. Evers’ office has already indicated he will veto GOP bills seeking to direct ARPA money.
