How Much Does The Third Stimulus Check Pay
The $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan includes a third round of $1,400 stimulus payments, topping off the $600 checks that were , and adding up to $2,000.
Congress passed the coronavirus relief plan with targeted income limits for maximum stimulus payments to individual taxpayers earning under $75,000 and joint filers making up to $150,000. But whereas the first and second rounds of stimulus payments phased out checks on a sliding scale of $5 for every $100 over the income limit, the new plan cuts off high earners at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples.
Eligibility for the third stimulus checks is based on your tax filing status. For more information on who qualifies for a third stimulus check, our tables below will help you calculate different payment options.
Check The Status Of Your Stimulus Check: New Irs Online Tool
What is this new tool and how do I access it?
The U.S. Department of Treasury and IRS have launched a new virtual tool that allows you to check the status of your Economic Impact Payment . Get My Payment is the free online tool and can be accessed through the IRS website on any desktop, phone, or tablet.
How does it work?
Tax filers will need to enter basic information including their Social Security number, date of birth, and mailing address. This information should be the same as what is recorded on your filed 2018 tax return .
This tool will provide you with the date that your check will be deposited into your bank account or sent in the mail to your address on file. You will be advised on which method your check will be delivered.
With this tool, you also have the opportunity to provide your bank information if you wish to receive your stimulus check via direct deposit . The IRS already has your bank information if it was provided on your tax return.
If you wish to receive your stimulus check faster, it is advised to provide your bank information. However, keep in mind that if your stimulus check has already been scheduled for delivery , you will not be able to change that and add your bank information.
While providing your bank information, you may also need to provide a few other personal details including your AGI from your 2018 or 2019 tax return, the refund or amount owed on that return, and your bank account type, account number, and routing number.
What Will The Status Report Look Like
For third-round stimulus checks, the “Get My Payment” tool will display one of the following:
1. Payment Status. If you get this message, a payment has been issued. The status page will show a payment date, payment method , and account information if paid by direct deposit. Note that “mail” means either a paper check or a debit card. If you don’t recognize the bank account number displayed in the tool, it doesn’t necessarily mean your deposit was made to the wrong account or that there’s a fraud. If you don’t recognize the account number, it may be an issue related to how information is displayed in the tool tied to temporary accounts used for refund loans/banking products.
2. Need More Information. This message is displayed if your 2020 return was processed but the IRS doesn’t have bank account information for you and your payment has not been issued yet. It could also mean your payment was returned to the IRS by the Post Office as undeliverable. As mentioned above, if your payment is returned, you’ll have the opportunity to provide the IRS your bank account or debit card information so they can issue a direct deposit payment . If you don’t provide any account information, the IRS can’t reissue your payment until they receive an updated address.
The portal is updated no more than once daily, typically overnight. As a result, there’s no reason to check the portal more than once per day.

Who Would Be Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check
Families earning less than $150,000 a year and individuals earning less than $75,000 a year should get the full $1,400 per person. Families earning up to $160,000 per year and individuals earning up to $80,000 per year will receive prorated stimulus checks for less than $1,400 max.
Unlike the previous two rounds, you will receive stimulus payments for all your dependents, including adult dependents and college students.

How Will The Stimulus Checks Affect My Taxes
The IRS doesnt consider your stimulus checks taxable income. So you will not have to report them on your tax return or pay income taxes for them.
If you are an eligible recipient who didnt get the first or second stimulus check, you can claim a recovery rebate credit to increase your tax refund or lower your tax liability.
This means that if you expect to get money back on your 2020 tax return, you could get a bigger refund depending on how much stimulus money you are owed. And comparatively, if you have to pay a tax bill, you can use the recovery rebate credit to offset it and get a refund for the remaining amount.
Taxpayers this year will look to their tax refunds as another source of extra money during the pandemic. In 2020, the IRS paid out more than $2,500 for the average tax refund. This year, it is expecting over 150 million tax returns to be filed.
The 2021 tax season starts on February 12. You will have to file your 2020 tax return by April 15.
If I Dont Qualify For The Third Stimulus Check Based On My 2019 Income But I Do Based On 2020 Can I Appeal To The Irs If Theyve Already Sent My Check
The IRS has until the end of the year to issue the stimulus payments for 2021 and will be reviewing returns for 2020. As the agency continues processing tax returns, additional payments will be made, tax experts say.
If you havent filed your 2020 taxes, but believe you qualify based on your income levels you should file your 2020 taxes to ensure the IRS has the latest information.
The IRS will continue to process stimulus payments weekly, including any new returns recently filed. If you still dont receive a stimulus, the IRS said they will reconcile this sometime this year, according to Curtis Campbell, President of TaxAct, a tax preparation software.
If the 2020 return hasnt processed for some reason, the IRS will go off 2019 return information. Then, after tax season, if someone files their 2020 tax return and it is processed, the IRS will do a true-up of the check between 2019 data and 2020 data, says Campbell.
For those who didnt get a check based on their 2019 income, file a 2020 return and the IRS will recover their payment based on their updated return, IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig said earlier this month during testimony on Capitol Hill.
The IRS will do a redetermination the earlier of 90 days after the tax filing deadline, which includes extensions, or Sept. 1, Phillips added.
The Irs Doesn’t Have Your Direct Deposit Info
The fastest way to get your stimulus check is via bank direct deposit from the IRS. If the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit info on file, you can still get paid, but it’ll come via paper check â and getting a check in the mail could delay your payment by weeks or even months. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told CNN that it was his idea that paper check stimulus payments have President Donald Trump’s signature on them, and that reports saying that the signature would add further delay to the arrival of paper checks is incorrect.
“The checks have not gone out yet,” Mnuchin said to CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, April 19, “and the reason they have not gone out yet is that we’re hoping that more people, as I said, will go to IRS.gov. It’s much safer to send out direct deposits.”
Most taxpayers provide the IRS with their bank account details, for the purposes of making a payment or receiving a tax refund. If the agency does not have your direct deposit details, you can provide the IRS with that information at the Get My Payment appâ which also lets you track the status of your check. However, the last day to give your direct deposit info to the IRS was May 13 if you missed the deadline, are eligible, and haven’t received your payment already, it will come as a paper check. You can still use the Get My Payment app to reveal how you will receive your payment , and give a scheduled arrival date, if the payment has been processed.

Your Financial Situation Changed From 2019 To 2020
Any changes to your financial situation in 2020 may affect your payment amount and receipt.
For most people, this will result from job or income loss due to the pandemic. If your income was higher than the phaseout thresholds in 2019, but your hours were cut or you only worked for part of 2020, you can claim the stimulus money you didnt receive using the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return.
If you had a baby in 2020, got married or divorced, you were previously claimed as a dependent, or you have a child who aged out of being claimed as a dependent, you may receive more after claiming the credit as well.
When youre ready to file 2020 federal taxes, an accountant or tax filing service may be helpful to clarify your exact eligibility. If you file on your own, your Form 1040 will include a Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet to help you determine the total amount youre eligible for.
You May See A ‘need More Information’ Message
According to the IRS FAQ, a Need More Information message in the Get My Payment tool means your payment was returned because the US Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver it.
The FAQ says you’ll be able to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit by providing a bank routing and account number, a prepaid debit card or a financial service account that has a routing and account number associated with it. The FAQ says you can also update your mailing address to receive your payment.

Will The Irs Tax My Third Stimulus Check
The IRS does not consider stimulus checks to be taxable income. This means that you do not have to report the money on your federal income tax return, or pay income taxes on your stimulus check.
You should also note, that if you owe taxes, you could still qualify to get a stimulus payment because the IRS does not use it to offset federal or state tax debts like it normally does with tax refunds.
For private debts, however, the American Bankers Association has pointed out a loophole in the new stimulus plan where banks and other financial services providers will be legally required to comply with court ordered garnishments. The association says that without legislation to shield your third stimulus payment, creditors or collectors can take it to pay off existing debt.
As a reference, the 2020 COVID-Related Tax Relief Act did shield stimulus payments from private debt collection: The Advance payments are generally not subject to administrative offset for past due federal or state debts. In addition, the payments are protected from bank garnishment or levy by private creditors or debt collectors.
But while your stimulus money could be taken to pay for private debt, the new offsetting rules prevent the IRS from deducting overdue child support from eligible recipients. You should keep in mind, however, that the IRS intercepted or reduced payment from the first round of stimulus checks for past-due child support.
What If I Am Not Required To File A Tax Return Can I Still Track My 3rd Stimulus Check
To use the Get My Payment tool to check the payment status of your stimulus check, the IRS needs enough information to verify your identity. The IRS may be unable to verify your identity if:
- You didn’t file an income tax return
- You didn’t use the IRS’s Non-Filers tool by November 21, 2020 to register for a payment or
- You receive federal benefits and the IRS doesn’t have enough information.

Advance Child Tax Credit
Even if you dont pay any taxes, you may qualify for a refund of the CTC.
The CTC was expanded under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 for tax year 2021 only. If you are eligible, you should have begun receiving advance Child Tax Credit payments on July 15. The payments will continue monthly through December 2021. Under ARPA, families are eligible to receive:
- Up to $3,000 per qualifying child between ages 6 and 17
- Up to $3,600 per qualifying child under age 6
The Internal Revenue Service began sending out letters in early June to more than 36 million families who may be eligible for the monthly payments. Most families do not need to do anything to get their payments, as long as theyve filed their 2020 or 2019 tax return. Learn more about the letter and how it can help you determine your eligibility.
What To Know About Adding Your Direct Deposit Details
You can’t use the Get My Payment tool to sign up for a new account or correct details about your payment. Even if the IRS is unable to deliver your payment to a bank account and the money is returned to the government, you won’t be able to correct the details online — the IRS says it will send the money again by mail.
The extended tax deadline was May 17. With the agency’s delay in processing tax returns, trying to register for a new direct deposit account with your 2020 tax return won’t get you into the system quickly enough. However, if you haven’t submitted your taxes yet, signing up for a new direct deposit account could still get you IRS money faster in the future, such as tax refunds or the upcoming child tax credit.

What Does The Stimulus Check Portal Do
The updated “Get My Payment” tool lets you:
- Check the status of your stimulus payment
- Confirm your payment type and
- Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date .
For first-round stimulus payments, you could also use the portal to enter or change your bank account information to have your payment directly deposited into your account. However, that feature isn’t included in the current tool . The IRS already has bank account information for millions of Americans from recent tax returns, tax payments, the original “Get My Payment” tool, the non-filers tool used last year, other federal agencies that regularly send out benefit payments , and federal records of recent payments to or from the government. So, the tax agency is generally limiting direct deposit payments to bank accounts that they already have on file. As a result, you can’t change your bank information using the “Get My Payment” tool.
If your payment isn’t deposited directly into your bank account, then you’ll get either a paper check or a debit card in the mail . You could also receive a payment by mail if your bank rejected a direct deposit. This could happen because the bank information was incorrect or the bank account on file with the IRS has since been closed.
How Do I Check The Status Of My Stimulus Check
If you would like to check the status of YOUR stimulus check, the IRS has rolled out a feature on the official IRS site to do so. The Get My Payment tool is highlighted on the home page of the irs.gov website that will provide the status of your stimulus check. The tool has been received with mixed reviews as it has currently worked for some, but not for others.
If the tool is currently not working for you, check back in a few days as the government continues to sort the glitches out. For more information on the stimulus checks such as qualifying criteria and what to do if you have not filed taxes in neither 2018 or 2019, please visit the Get Your Economic Impact Payment page on the official IRS website.

What Is A Coronavirus Stimulus Check
If you hadnt heard the news or are still unaware of what exactly these stimulus checks are, lets provide a brief explanation. As you know, the coronavirus pandemic has affected millions of lives around the world. In the United States, there has been over 34,000 reported deaths and over 20 million individuals have filed for unemployment since the quarantine shutdown started as a cause of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To relief individuals facing economic hardships as a cause of the coronavirus, The CARES Act , was signed into law by President Donald Trump on March 27, 2020. As a part of the CARES Act, Americans with a social security number who are not considered a dependent will receive payments of up to $1,200.
