HOUSEHOLDS have been given stimulus checks worth thousands of dollars during the coronavirus crisis.
We explain all you need to know about the number of stimulus checks issued, and whether there are plans to send out more in the future.
Bringing Inflation Under Control Is The Goal
Over the course of 2021, many economists and policymakers at the Federal Reserve felt that the higher-than-normal inflation would be temporary. However, as the level of inflation continued to rise to new heights by the end of the year the consensus shifted, and the central bank decided to be more hawkish.
In January the Fed announced that it would begin tapering its stimulus programs which have poured vast amounts of liquidity into the US economy. It has also helped the stock market reach ever greater heights.
Additionally, the central bankers will start increasing interest rates, expected to begin in March, which have been at near zero during the pandemic. The Fed will have a difficult balancing act to pace the fiscal tightening without entrenching inflation by moving too slow or causing a recession if it moves too fast.
Although another stimulus check could help people with the rising cost of living, the fear of driving inflation even higher by injecting even more money into the economy has silenced lawmakers calls to do so.

Update On A Fourth Stimulus Check
Millions have been clamoring for recurring stimulus payments, and some lawmakers have expressed support for more relief aid through the pandemic. But President Joe Biden hasn’t pledged support to a fourth check, focusing instead on his proposed family and jobs packages and the recent infrastructure deal.
In a press conference on June 3, White House press secretary Jen Psaki played down the possibility of a fourth check, asserting that the administration has already put forward an economic recovery plan. Through the debate in Washington over additional economic impact payments continues, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that there will be any more direct payments this year.
When The Stimulus Checks Will Stop Being Issued
Most of the third stimulus check payments have gone out from the IRS and US Department of the Treasury, based on the information the IRS has on hand to determine payment amounts. The , however, gives these federal agencies until Dec. 31, 2021, to send out all the third checks. That gives the IRS room to process 2020 tax returns and square up payments for those who are owed plus-up amounts, folks who filed for a 2020 tax extension and other groups, like people who moved or don’t have a fixed address .
Millions could end up receiving a smaller stimulus check than they’re owed.

More Third Stimulus Payment Money For Some In 2022
Parents who added a child in 2021 could be getting up to $1,400 after they file their 2021 taxes this coming spring thanks to the American Rescue Plan. The money won’t come as a direct check but will be part of the overall tax return.
The 2021 Economic Impact Payment — colloquially known as the third stimulus check — was actually an advance on what is called the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. What that means is that the $1,400 stimulus check most individual Americans received in 2021 is, in fact, money they would have gotten after filing their taxes in the spring of 2022 as a Recovery Rebate Credit.
In other words, millions of Americans already got part of their tax refund 12 months early.
“The bottom line is that’s money that’s going out almost immediately to millions of people as a tax credit in advance of putting it on a tax return in the next year,” said Raphael Tulino, IRS spokesman.
However, the IRS was going off of 2019 or 2020 tax returns for its information on the third EIP. It was using that information to determine if taxpayers would get stimulus money for their dependents. If eligible parents had a child born into their family in 2021, they can request the Recovery Rebate Credit on their taxes to get the payment for that child.
It gets more complicated with adoption because all the paperwork and processes to finalize the adoption must be completed first.
This does not pertain to the first or second stimulus payments that were paid in 2020.

However, the tool is also for those who did not file either a 2019 or 2020 tax return and did not use the previous nonfilers tool last year to register for stimulus payments.
In other words, individuals who experience homelessness or make little or no income can use this tool to enter their personal details for the IRS’ records so as to receive the $1,400 stimulus checks or claim the recovery rebate credit for any amount of the first two rounds of payments that might have been missed. Child Tax Credit: December End
Some families received another form of stimulus aid when the IRS in July deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.
Eligible families received up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid was due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan.
Families who qualify received $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.
While progressives and some Democrats urged lawmakers to continue the enhanced CTC, it appears stalled at the moment. That means families won’t receive a CTC payment in January or beyond.
Another Stimulus Check Could Help Fight Inflation But A Fourth Is Unlikely Experts Say
The administration then has to decide, do I spend the political capital to try to push for a single payment now or do I try to push for a longer-term solution now.
Story at a glance
- Some experts think Americans could greatly benefit from a cash infusion issued by the federal government to cope with rising inflation.
- Three economic impact payments were sent to all Americans under two administrations, alongside an expansion of the child tax credit and expanded unemployment benefits.
- All those programs have expired, and the Biden administration has been unable to get any of them extended on a permanent basis.
Even though pandemic relief measures like stimulus checks and child tax credits have expired, some policy experts believe another cash infusion could help many Americans and be politically advantageous coming as inflation skyrockets the cost of gas, groceries and more everyday essentials.
The federal government has issued three economic impact payments, or stimulus checks, since the coronavirus pandemic began. The last check for $1,400 was sent to Americans in March 2021. That money was a relief for many, keeping nearly 11 million people out of poverty across two administrations, data from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services shows.
The most impactful programs for alleviating poverty were economic impact payments under the ARP and unemployment compensation, said the HHS report.

Second Round Of Checks Up For Debate
Lawmakers are currently debating on a second round of stimulus checks.
Many Democrats have said that the first round of checks is not nearly enough for Americans, as businesses have been forced to close and people have had hours cut at work, been furloughed or lost their jobs entirely.
Over 50 Democratic lawmakers signed a letter in April encouraging monthly direct payments as part of a fourth coronavirus response bill, The Hill reported.
Republicans, however, have been less keen about a second round of checks and pushed for the economy to open instead.
The real stimulus thats going to change the trajectory that were on is going to be the economy, not government checks, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said during a virtual town hall.
So I doubt there will be another payment, he added.

Taxation Of Third Stimulus Checks
Question: Will my third stimulus check be taxed later?
Answer: No. As with the first two rounds of payments, your third stimulus check is actually just an advanced payment of the Recovery Rebate tax credit for the 2021 tax year. As such, it won’t be included in your taxable income.
You also won’t be required to repay any stimulus check payment when filing your 2021 tax return even if your third stimulus check is greater than your 2021 credit. If your third stimulus check is less than your 2021 credit, you’ll get the difference when you file your 2021 return next year. So, it’s a win-win situation for you!
How Will The Jobless Get A New Tax Break
The latest stimulus package to be signed into law creates a new tax break for tens of millions of workers who received unemployment benefits in 2020.
Tens of millions of people received jobless benefits last year after restaurants, factories and other places of business shut down during the pandemic. And many will likely benefit from this new tax break.
Its retroactive. This is for 2020, Pickering said. This is great news.
Until now, jobless benefits had to be reported as taxable income and many would likely owe federal income taxes on those benefits.
As part of the American Rescue Plan, many taxpayers would not be required to pay taxes on up to $10,200 in unemployment benefits received last year.
The exclusion is up to $10,200 of jobless benefits for each spouse for married couples.
So its possible that if both lost work in 2020, a married couple filing a joint return might not have pay federal income taxes on up to $20,400 in jobless benefits.
It can be a little confusing. So, for example, if one spouse received $15,000 in jobless benefits but the other received just $1,000 in unemployment compensation in 2020, then the exclusion for tax purposes that the couple would receive would be $11,200 not $16,000.
Not everyone will be covered.
The special provision to waive taxes on some unemployment income applies to those who made less than $150,000 in adjusted gross income in 2020.
Such a taxpayer could now exclude the $10,200 in jobless benefits.
