Make Sure The Irs Has Your Correct Address

If you have moved since filing your 2020 or 2019 tax return you need to let the IRS know your new address if the agency does not have your direct deposit details. Otherwise you risk having your stimulus check sent to your former address.

Luckily its a fairly straightforward process to change your address on record with the IRS. You simply file Form 8822 with the IRS. You can also call the IRS with the information, although keep in mind, with limited staff on hand, your wait time on the phone may be long. Note that it can take four to six weeks for your change of address to process with the IRS.

    Ensure A Smooth Change

The IRS is authorized to use a taxpayer’s last known address when it’s sending documents or other communications. This means that any documents or notices sent to the address the IRS has on file are legally effective and binding on you, even if you’re no longer living there and don’t receive them.

You can avoid missing important government communications and facing unintended financial or legal penalties by taking steps to ensure that your change of address is processed smoothly and quickly:

    • Hold off on filing your income tax return until after you’ve moved if you plan to relocate during the first four months of the year before the tax-filing deadline. You can file your tax return with your new address, and your refund check will be sent there.
    • File both a personal change-of-address form and a business change-of-address form if you also have a business at your home.
    • Couples who are separating should each file a change-of-address form, even if only one person is moving to a new address. That will enable the IRS to locate each taxpayer individually.
    • The U.S. Postal Service will usually forward any letters or refund checks from the IRS if you notify it of your change of address, but you should still file a change of address with the IRS to ensure that there’s no miscommunication or lost paperwork.

Once youve completed your change of address with USPS , its time to let the IRS know your new address. Note that it can take four to six weeks for your change of address to be processed by the IRS. Here are your options.

Use your new address when you file your 2020 tax return if you havent done so yet. The IRS says it will update its records with your new address. If youre typically not required to file taxes and havent received your stimulus payment, you can still claim your payment as Recovery Rebate Credit on your taxes this year.

If you already filed your taxes and didnt include your new address, you can notify the IRS of your address change by filling out Form 8822.

Let the IRS know in writing the address where you filed your last return by giving your full name, your old and new addresses, your Social Security number, individual taxpayer identification number or employer identification number and your signature. The IRS says you can also do this by phone, but it may request additional information.

The Latest On $1400 Stimulus Checks

This tax season, the government is also issuing a third tranche of third stimulus checks for up to $1,400 per individual, plus $1,400 per eligible dependent.

Last week, the IRS and other agencies said about 127 million checks have been sent to date, for a total of approximately $325 billion.

Those $1,400 payments are generally based on 2019 or 2020 tax returns, whichever was most recently filed and processed by the IRS. Those who used the IRS non-filer tool last year should also automatically get their payments.

There are also advantages to filing a 2020 return in order to receive the $1,400 payment, according to the IRS.

If your income dropped from 2019 to 2020, you could be eligible for a larger payment. The IRS has said it may potentially send follow-on payments to those people after their 2020 tax returns are processed.

Filing a 2020 tax return also lets you update your direct deposit information.

This tax season, non-filers are also required to file a tax return in order to get their payment, provided they have not already submitted their information to the government.

Of note, people who receive federal benefits such as Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Railroad Retirement Board and Veterans Affairs will generally receive their stimulus checks automatically, though there have been delays in processing some of those payments.
